Russia in 2014 is not a socialist or a communist country, it's a corrupt, authoritarian dump. Are you some kind of Rip Van Winkle who fell asleep in 1988 and just woke up?
In 1980 Moscow, then part of the USSR, hosted the games and they seemed to go pretty well, at least the toilets seemed to work ok. But the US didn't attend, the liberal President Jimmy Carter, who apparently just loves him some communism, loved the USSR so much he boycotted the games after the Soviets invaded Afghanistan, a disastrous war that Carter helped bait them into.
Yep, Russia went broke and that is where communism takes you. They spent 50 million they don't have and things didn't get done. We will see how they come up with the money after it is all over.
Carter boycotted the games and Russia turned around and boycotted the next games to get back at us. Yawn.

1. Russia went broke after communism. Communism didn't fall apart because the USSR went broke. At the end of the USSR, it took 2 US dollars to get one Soviet Ruble. By 1998 it took nearly 10 Rubles just to get a dollar (now it's more than 30) and the wages of Russian workers in no way kept up with the inflation that occurred following the collapse of the Soviet Union.
2. Why the yawn? I thought the entire, rather ridiculously stretched premise of this thread was that liberals just looooooved them some communism.
The Olympics cost Russia 50 million dollars and things still didn't work. Our Olympics cost 3 million and we had no problems. The difference in true capitalism and competition and the socialist/communist way of getting contracts---corruption and no competition.

Seems Communism is working just fine for China as all our stores are choc full of their Made in China stuff and Americans are jamming the parking lots of all the big box stores and malls to buy it..

If you think there was no corruption in Salt Lake City (which I presume is what you're comparing to, your numbers are rather off), I have a bridge to sell you. (Sorry about the blocked lanes - traffic study.)
Russia is exactly what happens when robber capitalism is allowed to run unrestrained - they're going through their own version of the gilded age, and of course their robber barons are grabbing everything they can.
And I'd still like to know who those liberals are who "hold Mother Russia up as a prime example of an utopian land" - are you sure that wasn't the voices in your head?

LOL Romney actually bragged about how much tax payer money he was able to extract and burn to build up the olympics in his mormon mecca.
This is a true troll thread from post #1
