Seriously? You want people to quit playing football because some bible banger insists on bringing a mythological deity into the middle of a huddle? How about he stop proselytizing and taking his preaching to his local house of worship? Seems like a much better solution.

The abyss? That's kind of a hysterical reaction to an assistant football couch quitting a job with a really lousy Division I team...

Maybe he'll find more suitable employment at a church.

I guess he resigned because some people didn't respect him. It's hard to bounce back from some things, like it or not. Employers may have to discuss this with employees/potential employees since people aren't capable of monitoring themselves.
You think he should resign because he may have made some people uncomfortable with one short sentence? You know what's worse than feeling uncomfortable for 10 seconds? LOSING YOUR JOB!

I don't understand when people had an absolute right not to be uncomfortable or even offended. What's wrong with just smiling and pretending to agree with them? It's common courtesy.

Isn't it also common courtesy not to force your religious beliefs on others?

Why couldn't he just keep his religion to himself for 10 seconds?
Problem solved.

Maybe he should have thought about what he was saying before speaking to a newspaper on behalf of his employer.
If I went out and gave an interview on behalf of my employer and said something that they disagree with I would probably be fired.
