Someone trying to hide the elephant inthe room??????

When an 84 yr old nun can break into a nuclear facility, someone has neglected security concerns. Imagine what a motivated terrorist could do at that facility!!!!!!

Bet no one in charge of that facility took any heat or was fired.
How much do you want to bet? Does this phrase ring a bell " including management changes"

Yeah, this appears to be an extremely excessive punishment for something such as this, as well as for what this nun did.

All because she trespassed into a federal nuclear facility and spray painted some peace signs. Man, I'll sleep more soundly tonight knowing she's off the streets, judge. She may now be the world's oldest political prisoner.
If you read the article, the judge sentenced her to considerably less than what the guidelines called for (over 7 years), and far less than the maximum (20 years) she could have been sentenced.

Should age matter?
Does that mean people in their 80s / 90s get to do whatever they want with nothing more than a hand slap ?
At what age does the free ride start?
Will some of you give me a list of what can be done without expecting any serious repercussions?
I might want to start making some plans.

We can only hope that what it means.

Think of all the other nuclear facilities that are as vulnerable and have the same level of protection as the one in the op.

National Nitwittery ... a bloody nation of drooling, authority worshiping dim-bulbs.

This country is lost ... totally defunct, and void of reason, common sense, and anything remotely resembling intelligent life.

The main questions that normal, sane, marginally competent persons would ask, and DEMAND of their justice system to use as guidelines are:

1) the nature of the offense - was there violence or intent to commit violence ...

2) did injury or harm come to other persons, whether intentional or unintentional

3) did the act pose a reasonable potential for harm to result to other persons

This is the basic criteria for imposing incarceration ... monetary damage in the insignificant amount of $1,000 can in no way justify prison for anyone, let alone an old woman.

The proper response to offenses which incur ONLY $ damages is restitution, including monetary penalty of an appropriate amount.

No one should have to be told this ... this should come to you as naturally as breathing. The question you should be asking is WHY DOESN'T IT? There is no excuse for having such a slippery grip on rational thinking.

Would you cheer on the jailing of your own Grandmother for the high crime of damaging your iPad? $1,000 is the cost of a good set of tires for your damed car.

Disgraceful level of stupidity.

How do you expect somebody who has taken a vow of poverty to make restitution or pay a fine?
she damaged Government property, committed criminal trespass, and painted graffiti (MORE damage to property).
IF Site Security had been on the ball, she and her cohorts COULD have been shot and killed the minute they crossed the first fence! IMO, that is what SHOULD have happened!
She got off light with only three years. Given the fact that she just might be paroled with half the sentence served (1 1/2 years), she might get off VERY light!

3 years seems excessive given her age, I would have done a year on her as a judge, but it could that she got nailed by minimum sentencing requirements, dunno.
It's the three strikes law, she had outstanding warrants for jaywalking and selling lemonade without a permit. This was the final straw for this hardened criminal. Examples need to be set.

Are trespassing laws at a nuclear facility unjust? Are they mere trifles that should not be enforced?

That's the implication of your argument, so... Let's see you make the argument up front and then the validity of that argument can be debated.

It beggars the imagination to conclude that society is somehow made safer by imprisoning for three years an 84 year old nun who cut through a chain link fence and spray-painted a few peace symbols on a wall as an act of political protest. This should be handled with a civil punishment, perhaps community service and/or a fine. Yet another sign that America is circling the drain.
