The good news is the new guy up to head the VA sounds more independent... and won't allow the administration to screw the vets over again, like the last guy did.

Seeking to avoid the crossfire between President Bush and Congress over budget spending, Peake told the Senate panel in a written statement that he will be an independent advocate for veterans. He also pledged to keep an open mind about setting a guaranteed level of funding for the VA each year — something the VA has generally opposed — to ensure the embattled agency can provide high-quality health care without shortfall risks to millions of veterans.

Veterans funding has been a sticking point between Congress and the Bush administration as they spar over spending for the Iraq war. In July 2005, months after taking office, former VA secretary Jim Nicholson suddenly announced the agency faced a $1 billion shortfall after failing to take into account the additional cost of caring for veterans injured in Iraq and Afghanistan. Government investigators later determined the VA repeatedly miscalculated — if not deliberately misled taxpayers — with questionable methods used to justify Bush administration cuts to health care.

In statements to Congress, Peake did not mention the 2005 budget shortfall but said he will closely consider the proposal to guarantee a minimum level of annual funding. Veterans groups say that would shield the VA budget process from politics and eliminate future shortfall risks.

I will never lose respect for these americans. I've lost it for our federal government, local governments, and a few celebrities, but never for our brave military.

The troops do a LOT for Americans. These little liberal playboys think they are free because of communist morons like Jimmy Carter... HAH! They are free to roam around and even free to call our military nasty names because the AMERICAN MILITARY ensured we weren't enslaved by Nazism, facism, communism, and now terrorism.

Shove it, Mark Cuban and your $26,000 movie, Redacted. The US Troops rule!!

Guess this is your attempt to be funny. First of all, Jimmy Carter was hardly a "communist", I suggest looking up what "communism" really is, rather than just throwing the word out there.
Second of all, my husband was in the military for 12 years, and he is a liberal and he had many liberal friends in the military. After the first "oil war" he wised up and got out. He would have probably stayed in, had he believed that he is defending the people that live in the US, not the corporate interests of the US - not the same thing.

I respect and support what the troops think they are doing for our country.

I do not support the fat cats lining their pockets on the blood of our troops nor the way they are given poor care when they get home.

There are many in the service that are liberals.
Talk about morons NG have you served our country in the military?

I don't think you have a clue what facism is.

Seems to me that, in your thinking, the military keeps us from being victims. Funny then, that the military creates more victims than any other institution. Sounds like a vicious circle.

Freedom isn't dispensed by others. It's free! Everybody's got it. Now, what are we going to do with that freedom? Oh, I don't know, maybe start a war? Silly humans, when will they learn?!

God would have done us a bigger favor simply by hitting some of these neocons in Washington over the head with a big stick. A lot of our boys and girls would have been left a lot better off if He had...

Kipling said it best: "It Tommy this and Tommy that and Tommy step aside. But when the drums begin to roll, its to the front, Mr. Adkins. When the drums begin to roll." (Paraphrased)

The people that benefit the most from WAR are never willing to pay the cost. The real price of war is always dumped on the working and the poor. The wealthy are too busy profiteering and their children are too precious to be put at risk of getting maimed, dead or crazy. This is the biggest privilege of real wealth. They benefit from war without having to pay the price.
