Who's "we"?

The people, or the government?

(Funniest thing about that question, is that our brethern of the southpaw persuasion think they are one and the same. They couldn't be more wrong, obviously. And the difference between their view of it, and normal people's view, is the difference between a successful system, and a system guaranteed to fail as the Soviet Union did.)

problem is the people of the "north paw" created a welfare system that doesn't lift people out of poverty but pays them forever and keeps them dependent on it.

Same thing. We're a Republic. You can run, and, if elected, you become the government.

in a world where even libertarians fight for their government-funded healthcare benefits, it's very unrealistic to think we'd move away from the 'cradle to grave' model.

(Holds up arms in a "T" shape)

"Southpaw" is baseball slang for a left-handed pitcher.

"Leftist", get it?

The Welfare system wasn't created by conservatives. It was created by leftists.

They had the best of intentions, as leftists frequently do. But the idea was doomed to fail, as leftist schemes generally are. And sure enough, it did far more harm than good, paying people to NOT work and NOT marry to raise their kids, while undercutting legitimate charities that could have helped without harming - harm that is still with us.

Game on.

Yes. We need cradles, and we need graves, and we need to live temporally between the two.

should the federal government provide your needs from cradle to grave?

Of course not. What a silly notion. The Fed govt can provide nothing, since it creates nothing. It can only take from one group and give to another.

That's called "theft and redistribution of stolen goods" where I come from.

And if the thief does it to benefit the poor or the sick or whomever, than that's called "theft and redistribution of stolen goods to benefit the poor or sick or whomever".

Its basic nature doesn't change, depending on who you fence the stolen loot with.
What was that silly "Cradle to Grave" ad 0blaba put out? Remember that? I can't remember the name of the cartoon character. It lasted about 2 minutes before it got pulled.

Found it. Julia:

Obama's 'Julia' Cradle-to-Grave - YouTube

Funny, the name Julia. No further comment.

Social engineering or experimentation. Your choice.

Either one is constantly doomed to failure.
