When I became unemployed here in Germany the unemployment agency paid for about 15,000 Euro in schooling and certifications. Now I am earning more than before, and probably they have made there money back x2. I am an American citizen and have been living here for 14 years with permanent residence from my former marriage.
On many levels Germany, both government and corporate, seems to see the value of looking after there population and work force as a long term investment.
This is true. But take into account that German Doctors don't make nearly a much as their American Counterparts. Then also German Doctors don't have to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars for medical school because their education is founded by the Government.
And they probably don't have to spend as much administrative time fighting with the insurance companies -better working hours.

Perhaps they don´t make as much but they still seem to do quite well. My friend who unfortunately died in a small plane crash recently was a orthopedist here and his lifestyle did not seem too much different from the doctors I knew in the US. Nice house, nice car,hot wife, expensive ex wife, small airplane, small racing sailboat, yacht charter vacations around the world...

But welfare is substantial less than it used to be and the reforms created more pressure on german employees because now they have to spend all their savings before they can receive welfare. Add to that that unemployment insurance in Germany only runs for 12 months, if you are still unemployed after that you automatically fall on welfare and have to spend all your savings ergo becoming part of the poor underclass.
The person i responded to obviously didnt mean the above.

Bascially the reform were to increase competitiveness in world market and now others in EU are complaining they can not compete because of lower cost and better skilled workers. But still they do not approach US ;which has bigger economy than Germany; China and UK combined.
However the reforms were made in the 2000's when Germany was labeled the sick man of Europe by the economist not in the 1990's.

I will be joining you in the coming years, as my sister did a few years ago. My first visit to Germany in 2006 blew me away. It was the most efficient, organized and clean (big cities) nation I've ever been to. I spent 3 months in Berlin this last summer, I am in love.
I remember a few years ago, facing the prospect of layoffs. The government allowed companies to cut worker hours by picking up the tab on lost wages. Eventually the economy rebounded and everything returned to normal. It was a wise investment because they avoided paying unemployment and job training. Whenever a new employee is hired, there is a period of training and slow gradual improvement in output. This system avoided all that.
Germans are well educated but it's the extreme focus on attention to detail which sets them apart. Absolutely no cutting of corners. Another thing is extreme self confidence without being arrogant. Their football team reflects this, no matter win or lose the Germans always score and put up a fight til the end.
When everyone is doing their part, it's an unbreakable assembly line but sadly this is changing with influx of immigrants (like myself). The lack of individualism and at times feeling of a robot like society, is present but that's the negative of such a successful system. The German is steady and always in control, no matter how many Weisse bier he drinks.
Germany is not a socialist country, neither is France, Italy, Spain, England etc... Or any of the other countries that liberals like to pretend are socialist but really are not.
All of those countries are in fact Capatilists, they have a free market where people buy, sell, and trade goods and services for profit. They just have more social programs than us, but that doesn't make them Socialists.
A socialist country would be China or Cuba or NK. Socialism and Communism are the same thing, just a transition period.
Have you never watched CSPAN? They have shown Germany and their "town hall" things...
Definitely not happy people there. They know their peasants, and they know they are getting jipped. The sad thing is.. they keep voting for more of the abuse because they've always been pretty stupid...
