I am not sure about the percentages.......however, there is something to this.
I live just north of a very "white" larger city.......with a lot of high end subdivisions.
I know three families with young adults in rehab (two several times)......there is a big problem in this area.
It is a very big problem indeed. Here in Ohio more people died over the past year from heroin overdoses than car accidents. Which is why I find it hypocritical that we're still fighing a silly war on weed, when you have people getting jacked up on stuff that is way worse.

One problem with heroin is its purity varies greatly, Thus the ODs. Legalize it.
Why is this a public health issue vs a criminal issue like the crack epidemic was? Why didn't they just legalize cocaine and make sure that it was pure for the users?

All drugs should be legalized. I don't see heroin being treated as a public health issue. My opinion is a minority opinion. Few want heroin legalized.

I've heard the claim made that one reason for the increasing popularity of heroin is it's cheaper than many 'legal' drugs which can be $20-30/pill on the street while a bag of heroin can be had for $10.

Yeah, because if there's one thing this country needs, it's more f*cked up people walking around.
Why stop at legalizing it?
Why don't they make it free?
My gosh, we've got record numbers of people on anti depressants, anti anxiety meds, etc.
Then they legalize pot- if they legalize heroin- it's total insanity.
It's what I call crash & burn...keep the population stoned, as behind the scenes the country is disintegrating.

True. Here in northeast Ohio they were cutting it with an even more powerful painkiller. As for legalization, I suppose if folks want to mess with something like this, then rock on. I don't feel anyone should go to jail for possession, or consumption unless a crime was committed while trying to obtain it, or while on it.
IMO where this all started is with doctors handing out prescription opiates for pain like candy. People get hooked, then can't get their prescriptions refilled, and therefore try to get the pills on the street, and if not then resort to heroin.
Junkies are stupid and self destructive. No sympathy here. I guess life is hard being a white person living out in the 'burbs.
