It's quite the step up from the series of 10-day excursions he was once allowed to make outside the mental hospital he's called home since shooting Ronald Reagan in 1981. John Hinckley will now be allowed to stay with his mother in Williamsburg, Virginia, for 17 days per month, up from the 10 days per month he had been granted.
The man clearly had mental issues and if he is no longer a threat to the general public, I see no reason why not. It's not like he was a terrorist who shot Reagan to further some political goal; he was just some crazy guy who was obsessed with a celebrity and if his treatment has been effective or if he is essentially harmless due to age or poor health then I see no reason to keep him penned up for the rest of his life other than spite.

I have to agree. If he had shot Joe Blow he probably would have been out long ago.
