The insured have always paid for the uninsured. You knew that right.

What if you can't or the only job you can get pays half of what you used to get?

You don't understand this thread and I don't feel like trying to explain it to you. If you are interested, go back and read the OP very slowly.

Because someone is able to buy health insurance for themselves, tax payers pay? Not quite.

1. You can not stay on an employee health insurance plan of your spouse once you are divorced. Any negotiations about insurance are about 36 months of COBRA, that's all.

2. COBRA charges the same plus an administrative fee. The premiums are usually not being paid by the employee 100%, and employer rates/plans are different than individual rates/plans. Saying that "the premiums are exactly the same" is not only wrong but meaningless when you haven't been paying the premiums in the first place.

3. ANYONE can loose their job. I don't care how good you are at it. Your next job may not offer insurance no matter how much you negotiate and you may not ever find another company that does who wants to hire you. People who have it now through an employer, who pays the bulk of the premiums and offers really good coverage, are LUCKY. That includes me. It is NOT because we are somehow smarter or more superior to those who don't. LUCK LUCK LUCK. And it's all going to go away in time. It should go away, it's a ridiculous two tiered system we have created and it not maintainable in the long run. Insurance of any sort will not and should not be tied to employment for the reasons I mentioned here.
