Love Russia's reasoning, they were protecting ethnic Russians in Crimea, unfortunately the Crimean's were unaware there was a problem.

Ukraine's ousted president wrote a letter to Putin asking him to invade, come on
Why did he need to write a letter, he was probably sitting right next to him.

Quote:
America's U.N. ambassador blasted Russia on Monday for its "dangerous
military intervention" in Ukraine, calling it a violation of international law
and saying: "It must stop."

"There is nothing that justifies Russian conduct," Ambassador Samantha Power
said, speaking at a U.N. Security Council meeting just minutes after her Russian
counterpart delivered defiant remarks.

Russian Ambassador to the U.N. Vitaly Churkin defended the use of Russia's
military in Ukraine's Crimean Peninsula, claiming the "legitimately elected
authorities" in that region asked Russia to intervene and saying this was
"completely legitimate under Russian law."

He also claimed Ukraine's ousted president wrote a letter to Russian
President Vladimir Putin asking for him to use the military in
Ukraine.

The reason Putin went in is quite simple:

Crimea is of huge strategic military importance to Russia. Russia has significant military assets on Crimea - including their only naval based with striking access into the Mediterranean. Putin sees the EU as a threat and considers this location to be of critical value in facing off against the EU.

When Ukraine was run by pro-Russian people, Putin got the benefit of having a "buffer" between Russia and the West and could count on their cooperation with Russian military assets in Crimea. Now that the government fell and pro-Western folks gained power, he calculated that he would not be able to reliably maintain strategic access to Crimea unless he acted pre-emptively before Ukraine becomes an EU satellite. I would wager that he would much, much rather have maintained the puppet government rather than have had to resort to this "liberation," which he must realize comes with really significant political and economic costs. It indicates how desperate he is to maintain that base and how much he sees the EU as a genuine military threat.

In 1994 the U.S., Russia and U.K. signed an agreement to defend Ukraine from invasion in exchange for it's agreeing to eliminate all it's nuclear weapons and sign the nuclear non-proliferation treaty. This agreement to defend Ukraine was extended in 1997 to NATO, and reaffirmed in 2007.

NATO and the U.S. have a treat to defend Ukraine. If we don't, then the NATO treaty and most joint protection treaties to which NATO or the U.S. are party become suspect. Our failure to defend Ukraine will also add grist for arguments by Iran and North Korea regarding the west's inability to honor it's treaties.

I am a bit surprised the press isn't discussing this a bit.

But that was with a elected government; not one based on a coup. Look at Georgia and you see likely outcome; split off. Protect against who; a coup by rebels /protestors using force?

It's been done before.

In 1938 Germany was forced to come to the aid of ethnic Germans living in Czechoslovakia.

Did the Russians claim they're only looking for Weapons Of Mass Destruction?
Anyways, Crimea wax giving to Ukraine in 1960s, while it was all Soviet Union. Ukrainians have no historical claim and local population is largely Russian and pro-Russian. That's why the "international community" will do nothing.

What I do not get is how the US can do such things.....but Russia cannot. Maybe Russia should have created a no fly zone and sent planes in to bomb in support of the faction that they want to win the "civil conflict".

This is like Republicans and Democrats in America. When one party does something, they say it is ok, but when the other party does the same thing, they attack them for it. There is a word for that and its called hypocrisy. The world is plagued by hypocrisy and fake democracy.
