Kids have to be taught what's good for them. What would you rather do? Serve them pizzas so they can get fat? They'll get used to fresh fruit and vitamins. My mother always made me eat my veggies and fresh fruit. Looking back now I am grateful for it, even though I hated it then.
So, if parents are not liken to your mother, it's the responsibility of others to teach and raise their children?
I don't even see why school lunch is necessary, school only lasts 6-7 hours and that's not a very long time between meals. Just eat a big breakfast and then eat lunch when you get home, and there's no issue.
Actually, a good pizza can be quite nutritious. I could swear I posted some nutrition facts from Pizza Hut on this thread, or some other thread recently. A homemade pizza, such as can be made in a school kitchen can be even better. You can watch the fat content by avoiding pepperoni, sausage and other fatty meats, using low or lower-fat cheeses (and limiting the amount). You can load it up with veggies.
I work at a facility that has a vegetarian cafeteria. They have pizza every day, with lots of veggies. I don't often get it, but it's good.
Most schools don't have kitchens anymore to make from scratch.
Meals are contracted out to one of the big 3 providers.
They just microwave now.
There was a poster here that was a cook in her school cafeteria and they did cook from scratch.
There's a world of difference between those types of schools and the ones that just microwave the trays.
The pre made pizzas aren't "supreme" though..just lots of cheese.
Would you rather pay for it later when all these individuals are not able to function and hold a job because they're grossly overweight? Or maybe spend more Medicare money on diabetes supplies?
As a con, you still don't get the simple fact that in the end the society pays for all problems?

Take it up with doctors. They claim lunch is critical when you're in your teens.

It's already happening today.
Obesity didn't start yesterday.
And it has already peaked and is on a decline.
Yeah..one meal at school will prevent obesity.
The parents have nothing to do with it.
Two pounds of beef are very nutritious, too. Pizza, especially the cheese on it is pretty bad. I love pizza but my 10 yo gets pizza only sporadically. At home. The school should give kids a nutritious and balanced diet. Spoiling kids with sweets, pizzas and burgers should be left to parents.
Just because a dish is vegetarian doesn't mean it's automatically healthy.... Try drinking a bottle of canola oil.
This is why we need nutrition standards in school lunches! Too many lay people think pizza is "bad".
I really need to get off CD, but I may do some more research on this later.
In the interest of brevity, I did not mention that the hospital cafeteria I was referring to is 7th Day Adventist, which is into "healthy" as well as vegetarian. Oh, well, that's what happens when I try to be concise.

No doubt we will pay for it later, as well. You will see to it. I do not doubt that at all.

Good for your district.
Sadly we can't afford to hire cooks.
Just a GED and the food handler's card which anyone can get online via a few simple questions.
