The ability to sponsor your spouse for an immigration visa is a natural individual freedom?
The ability not to testify against your spouse in a criminal trial is a natural individual freedom?
The ability to shop at a base commissary if your spouse is in the military is a natural individual freedom?
The ability to have a lawsuit heard for wrongful death against your spouse's murderer is a natural individual freedom?
With individual freedom, you already have all of those and more.

if we really want to look at what the governments role has been, it warrants more than just a simplistic approach that "lives in the moment". It requires a real look at the history.

natural law can not be governed. marriage predates any modern religion or government. if the government wants to deviate from natural law, then it should create a new institution to achieve its goals, leave marraige alone.

The origin of marriage had nothing to do with religion or government. It had to do with property. You quoting Cesar just proves this.
Uh, no. The marriage as an institution has been always associated with religion. People were cohabiting together long before that but the concept of sanctity of marital bounds came with religion. Try again.
