Do you think that those who are successful in work and in life and in finances got to that point.......

........not because of hard work.

........not because of good decision-making.

........not because of they focused on both the process and the result.

........not because they paid attention to the right details.

........not because they put in what they wanted to get out.

........not because they played both their strengths and their weaknesses.

........not because they kept their instincts in check and resisted impulses.

........not because they knew they couldn't please everyone.

........not because they had an attitude of gratitude and loads of passion.

But because they had luck, and lots and lots of it?

When I read the comments on this thread and the linked Democratic Underground site, all I really see is a common theme that many believe that the key to success in America is not hard work, passion, good decisions, etc......it's merely LUCK!

Where do you stand on this?

Look around you, many people who are set up well HAVE been lucky. Whether family money, easy access to a well paying job via connections, right place right time situations, etc. I've stated here myself that I have been very lucky because I know damn well I'm not superior to most people. Some people, yes, but no all

I also know that there are successful people who have worked hard to get where they are. And hard workers who will never get ahead.

This isn't either/or.

The liberal steroetypes are flat out disgusting.

I'm a flaming liberal and I still believe in making your own luck.

HOWEVER, the hand you are dealt does help, in some regards.

Good points. But I think some confuse "hard work" with "working hard." Millions of American's get up out of bed everyday and come home after work sore and tired because they "worked hard." While that is admirable (I am no stranger to manual labor/working hard), that's not necessarily the definition of "hard work" in the sense that it takes A LOT of effort, not just punching the clock every day, to get ahead and make something come together (like a business) and be financially successful.

If the idea that is that you "worked hard" today is going to make you financially successful, then perhaps those who misunderstand need to reevaluate their goals and what it will actually take to revel in success.

Not in every case. Some become wealthy because of Luck or fortune ie inheritance, not because of hard work.
Others get rich with scams and by questionable ethics: Oil, equity, debt and Currency traders with giant computers timing the markets, Hedge fund managers and private equity raiders to name a few.

While some do become rich by their hard work and persistance it is becoming less and less heard of.
Climbing the corporate ladder only works for the elites who are well connected coming out of ivy league schools.

Agreed. Luck is a factor, among the others that the OP listed.

Who doesn't know a creative, intelligent, hard-working person who just missed the gold ring? Conversely, who doesn't know a mediocre person doing well because they had well-off parents who were able to help them?

I know a family who had a car handed to them (a couple times through the years), help paying their mortgage, help of all kinds. Why? Because everyone feels sorry for them. What do they do? Nothing, when they need something they know that some fool will help them out. Of course they are democrats.
