Lots of areas in the South have pretty much down-to-earth folks and much of liberals apparently tend to be snobby. Liberals in South don't appear to be all liberal but there aren't very many.

Speaking of stereotypes...

I too have visited the south rather extensively (lived there for a couple of years in the Army too) and quickly got tired of incessantly being called a Yankee when I'm from the west not the north but it is very much part of southern culture to always blame everything bad which ever happened to them on the Yankees. It's tiring and rather stupid.

Now let's be realistic here. All states have rural areas that have so-called bible belts. Here in northeast Ohio we consider that anything pretty much outside of Akron area is Ohio's bible belt. Save for Columbus which is in the center of the state.

LOL, because that is hilarious and ironic! That's the point.

I actually love many parts of the South-especially Asheville and Blue Ridge Mountains, Savannah, Charleston, The Outerbanks.
I'll be in NOLA for the first time in July and can't wait.

I've spent some time in the south, and other than the heat/humidity, I like it. There are actually desirable places in the south, you have people coming in from all over. People that are willing to move and start a new life away from family and friends bring in a differnt dynamic than places that are "static" with the same small, "parochial" group of people generation after generation. The area I am in now is similar...there has been tremendous growth and influx of people from other parts of the country. Parts of Alabama seemed similar, with even more business growth, especially manufacturing.

The 2 worst areas I have been in are Western NY (where I was born and raised) and central Michigan, specifically Flint. Lets face it-NOBODY willingly moves there. You end up with a large population base that knows nothing different and thinks the entire country is like those areas. They haven't experienced areas with growing businesses, new construction and a growing population base. The areas are in decline with a continuous outward migration, at least among working people and businesses. The NE and "midwest" (Ohio, western NY and MI in particular) are known as the "rust belt" for a reason.

It's because the South are solidly Conservative states and lag behind the rest of the nation in pretty much every category, so Liberals love to point at the South as 'proof' that Conservative laws and policies lead to poverty and failure. But they've been trailing the rest of the nation since the Civil War. Meanwhile, many Conservative states outside of the South rank towards or at the top of the same charts -- Kansas, Nebraska, North/South Dakota, Wyoming, Utah, etc. each rank highly in various social and economic metrics, but they're often ignored or written off because they defy the assumption that Conservative policies lead to failure.

Because the South isn't interested in making places more urban, more controlling, expensive and fast pace like other liberal strongholds. There is a good reason why many still continue to migrate down South.

There is a perception by many Northerners that Southerners are ignorant, fat and bigoted. While some Southerners no doubt are, I haven't found much difference in American's intelligence, weight or bigotry no matter where they live.

The difference between the N and S is politeness in my considerable experience of living in both areas of the country. In general, Southerners are much, much more polite than Northerners. Not even close.

It goes both ways. Plenty of liberals will probably pick out new stories specifically about the South or Texas. On the other hand though conservatives on here wish California would just fall into the ocean or perish into a massive earthquake(that's nice). As well anytime anything happens in San Francisco in terms of public policy(even when it's one person proposing something that isn't even a law yet or on a ballot yet), people who don't live there, will never live there, and have no connection to the area feel like they need to chime in and comment about "all dem silly liberal queers".

Honestly, personally I don't really care what goes on in the South in terms of politics. The South to me is just an interesting travel location with really great unhealthy food, but I'd never live there most likely.

The south is a safe target for them.

In general I think Southerners are seen as more uneducated. We see the types of politicians Southerners elect, and often times it seems clear, the only issues they care about, are electing officials who are against abortion, and same sex marriage. It is particularly frustrating when you hear republican politicians who represent these states constantly attacking the poor and middle class, and then discover that there are more poor people collectively in the south, than there are in the north. It is mostly the democratic politicians who support the poor and working class, yet southern states almost always go red. When a demographic check is done, and it is realized that states like KY, TN, WV, SC, LA, MS, AL have more people on welfare, food stamps, LIHEAP, using WIC benefits, and more people on social security disability in these states comparatively, it does not make sense that these same people who enjoy these benefits keep voting for the same conservative politicians who want to cut all of these services, while expanding benefits for the wealthy.
