The most popular and lethal drug in every society will always be alcohol. It causes problems (drunk driving, liver disease, etc.), but at least we don't have additional innocent victims because of drive-by shootings as gangs fight over turf to sell illegal alcohol that is made with all types of impurities.

Heroin is bad mainly because of its street quality and because of shared needles. Most people that die as a result of heroin use die from AIDS or overdoses. AIDS is caused by shared needles and overdoses are typically caused because the user shot up an unexpectedly pure product. We would have both those problems to a significantly less degree if people could buy unadulterated heroin and needles at the supermarket, just like they buy bottles of Jack Daniels that are made in clean factories and say "40% alcohol" on the label.

Cocaine is bad only because of its street quality and price. Because cocoa leave can't be grown domestically, coke always has to be imported, and thus its price is outrageously high and it gets cut with all kinds impurities before a dealer can make a profit by selling it. So coke addicts usually become broke and suffer horrible health problems. Some of America's heroes, including Mark Twain and Ulysses S. Grant, used cocaine back when it was legal and they could get a pharmaceutical-grade liquid instead of sketchy white powder. They were functioning citizens, didn't have to go broke or burn a hole through their septum.

Meth has been around for a while and is only dangerous because of its street quality. Same deal as the previous two drugs I mentioned. It's a good thing that people who like "uppers" are able to get their high from pharmaceutical-grade speed like Ritalin, Adderall, etc.

"Psychedelic" drugs like LSD, Psilocybin mushrooms, Peyote and Ayahuasca/DMT are physically harmless and non-addictive anyhow. It's a myth that Jimi Hendrix and Jim Morrison died from LSD use. They both died from legal sleeping pills.

Milton Friedman on what would happen if we legalized all drugs:

"I see America with 1/2 the number of prisons, 1/2 the number of prisoners, 10,000 fewer homicides every year, inner cities in which there's a chance for these poor people to live without being afraid for their lives, respectable citizens who are now addicts, not being subject to becoming criminals in order to get their drug, being able to get drugs for which they're sure of the quality." ~ Milton Friedman

Because there is money and power in keeping things illegal. It's not a matter of what's right or logical.

All drugs should be legalized. Prescription drug overdoses dwarf illegal drug overdoses by tens of thousands each year. Stop this insane war on citizens, and especially poor inner city citizens.

Put the corporate prison gestapo out of business, and put the billions saved toward education and drug treatment. Cut the drug gangs at the knees, and put the cartels out of business.

85% of all the problems will go away.

At this point I think its corruption pure and simple. Hell, the DEA is selling drugs and picking winners and losers. How the hell a taxpayer sponsored organization, who's sole purpose is to stop drugs, can sell drugs and get away with it is beyond me.

EVERYBODY needs to get behind ending the drug war. We need to focus on addiction and the societal ills associated with drug use and move on. The legal drugs are killing way more people. 8x more than all illegal drugs combined to be exact.

Most countries have not legalized drugs, and it has nothing to do with money.

That doesn't mean its a smart position. And yes it DOES have to do with money. And probably fear. Fear of the cartels and gangs you seem to be protecting.

AIDS is caused by a virus, which spreads by sharing needles among other things.

They fight the cartels because they fear them? Ok, if you say so, then it must be so. Tell me how Sweden makes money on keeping heroin illegal?
