Guns are both political and controversial..... especially when they are mixed with kids.
Yes, they are, but the story is about a field trip. I'm certain this trip was not part of a political science course, and I'd bet that the subject of politics was never raised. Wouldn't this thread be more appropriately placed in an education forum?

Guns are neither political nor controversial. The viewpoint of certain people when it comes to guns is political and/or controversial. As far as kids are concerned, in my opinion every school should have at the very least a gun safety course in order to teach children how to be around firearms without putting themselves in danger.

Okay. I think the time would be better spent on academics, but it's their choice.
When I was a kid, Hunter Ed was the only option that required you have good marks in all your other classes first. They didn't let **** disturbers take the course either. Getting to play with guns as well as the other fun stuff was a privilege we had to earn.
Agreed, if that's what the school boards' constituents want. Again, educational, not political.
I don't think anything should be based on "what the school boards constituents want".... If that were the case, no doubt there would be public schools teaching creationism in some districts....
Just for clarification, do you consider wood, metal, plastics, or auto shop to be academic?
No. That's not to say they shouldn't be part of the school experience, however, we have fallen behind tremendously in math, science, computer science, physics, chemistry, etc... These are academic subjects and need to be first priority-- not trips to gun ranges, or recycling plants for that matter.
It's not a controversy and nobody seems to care, even on CD. A first?
