How would it deincentivize people from working? It's only income for you to survive. It's not like BI would allow you to buy multiple houses and cars. A lot of people have long term goals, but they lack the funds to get the proper training and education. If people have income to feed and house themselves, they can invest in their future be in enterprise or education.
BIG only gives you pocket money to survive. If you want more money, you would have to take private sector risks or go the conventional route of labor mobility.
By "invest in their future" do you mean go to school so you can compete for a job at McDonalds like college graduates are doing in Sweden?
Many homeless people are mentally ill and some choose to be homeless.
As for food banks, it makes sense for private charities to store non-perishable food to give to those in need.
There are a lot of homeless families with children. NYT did a piece a while ago about how there are 15,000 homeless children in NYC alone. That's an alarming number. Blame the parents is fine. However, you it's intellectually dishonest to say homelessness is a result of self infliction. Tons of families become homeless due to layoffs after they couldn't sustain housing expenses.
my question is, if the government are so gun ho on wealth distribution, how come when your dad died, they take 50% of the estate. you would think if they really care they let you keep what your dad earned
What happens when people run out of "basic income" After all those pushing for basic income saying it will free up so many things in life.
Eventually people do run out of money. People run out of food stamp money near the end of the month (or even in the middle of the month).
So once they run out of money for the month with basic income, do they just keep asking for more basic income?
That's why there will always be incentives for private sector risks and incentives. BI only covers the basics. Basically, it's just a safety net for self reliance in regards to food and shelter. That's all.
They just got $250/month extra in pocket money --- $3,000/year , without any government involvement, and without taking anything from anyone else.
See how easy that is?

We can objectively define "homeless" (snicker) in no uncertain terms:
1] The individual is free of impediments to manage a household. This is demonstrated by being clean and sober for a period of not less than 12 months, and by continuously engaging in addiction treatment; and/or by engaging in a mental health treatment plan that stabilizes the individual's condition to function at a level that permits household management; and
2] The individual desires to have housing; and
3] The individual is actively seeking housing, which is defined as the individual making a minimum of 2 contacts per week with persons providing permanent housing.
A person who meets all three prongs of the test is homeless....so, there are no "homeless" (snicker) but keep drinking the Kool-Aid® if it makes you feel better.
