abqjournal News: MEXICO on the Edge, The Drug Cartel Threat

But I doubt that makes for as good a story.
Hmmm...could you please pass this on to our top government officials...apparently they have been duped into thinking the weapons are coming from the US.

Though public attention focuses on the drugs smuggled from Mexico to the north, officials here are increasingly concerned by an ever more lethal flow of guns south from the United States.

The growing number of assault rifles and semiautomatic weapons showing up in shootouts and assassinations has bolstered the arms caches of Mexico's drug cartels, officials in both countries say. And they feed one of the highest rates of gun homicide anywhere in the world.

This weekend, Attorney General John ******** is coming here to meet with the nation's top law enforcement officials, and the firearms issue is on the agenda. High-level American and Mexican officials will meet here on Tuesday to discuss the problem.

"This is a large problem," said Gary Thomas, chief of the firearms division at the United States Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. It is magnified, he said, by the increasing number of high-powered semiautomatic weapons and assault rifles entering the country. "These firearms are utilized more by the narcotraffickers and organized crime groups," he said.

It's not about gun control, it's about the lack of attention to people who obviously have a mental illness that needs treatment.

Guns don't kill people,
People kill people!

Well it is quite simple really, those in DC are in favor of gun control, always have been.
Bush himself said he would sign a new 'Assault weapons ban'(whatever an assault weapon IS) if it reached his desk.

Now a few more questions for you....

HOW are automatic weapons being smuggled into Mexico when those weapons have severe restrictions placed upon them(jump through gov. hoops, tax stamp, etc.) HERE?

Also HOW are grenades showing up when you cannot OWN a grenade here?

Same with rocket launchers???

As corruption is rampant in Mexico, why wouldn't the drug cartels simply buy their weaponry from the corrupt police???

it is competitive, and you are challenging someone else, in hunting a deer doesnt have a gun and isnt hiding behind the bushes trying to shoot at you, if that was the case I'd call it a sport

When the Dolphins play the Patriots they were huge underdogs and no one was giving them a chance in hell, but they still had a chance as they showed up on the field and were playing the same game as the Patriots, that isnt the case with hunting

By the way, the 1994 'AWB' never made the weapons illegal, and simply forced certain cosmetic features be removed....the same rifles were for sale BEFORE the AWB was allowed to sunset, the rifle simply couldn't have a folding stock for example....
