Gotta love the gov't. They must stay up nights thinking of ways to screw us.

For six years, Iowa has collected more than $20 million for a tax that didn’t exist.

When questioned about it, the Legislature adopted the solution preferred by small children who’ve done something wrong — they pretended it never happened.

In 2008, the Legislature passed a bill that accidentally included language repealing the section of the tax code that imposed a sales tax on heavy machinery purchased in the state. No one noticed until last summer, when a lawyer contacted the Iowa Department of Revenue seeking clarification about the tax.

Faced with the possibility of having to refund more than $20 million collected for a nonexistent tax, not to mention losing an estimated $7 million in taxes a year going forward, lawmakers passed a bill Thursday reinstating the tax and making it retroactive to the date of its accidental repeal.

The governor is expected to sign it.

The problem is that the people will do nothing. If they would all get together and say they are going to retroactively rescind their votes maybe the politicians wouldn't think the are such Patsy's.

Allmny of them will say is " I'm not going to buy heavy machinery so I don't care".

That isn't the problem here. The problem is politicians voting for a bill and they don't even know what is in it.

This is a BS article.

The tax was never repealed, even the previous paragraph of the article simply says the language was changed, and it was done so to give an exemption to those who rent/lease, not buy.

I know there is a hate for the government , but come on people, this was a simple mistake on wording, not something intentional.
