Recent push to legalize gay marriage and marijuana are two such examples.

Are we seeing a push back from government in a civilized manner?

I think it is. It will take a couple of decades to have large effects on a federal level.

Just look at Rand Paul a few weeks ago, one day he was applauded at cpac and the next day he was applauded for a speech at Cal Berkley. I did not think that was possible and shows how the right libertarian can pull voters from both parties.

I think it is in some ways but people are also wary of labeling themselves to be of a particular political party. Really we are seeing a resurgence of Independent thinkers with plain old common sense (at least I hope so). Fiscal conservatism/honesty and social liberalism is the opposite of what we have now but is what most people are/want.

No, libertarian isn't becoming more popular, people are becoming more liberal.

It's become extremely popular for people who vote exclusively for Republicans to call themselves Libertarians.

That is true with myself, as I get older.

It is. I see a lot of people on my facebook who have libertarian as their political view, who are clearly not libertarian.

If they are friends you have in Portland, they are probably just liberals.

I concur that social liberalism is becoming more popular. Libertarianism has become tarnished by the baneful spectacle of the racist, xenophobic, homophobic Jesus freak "tea party" successfully annexing the term.

Nah - calling yourself a Republican is becoming more embarrassing.
