This is a common problem in today's society, especially seen in the ultra-right conservatives. They think that the first amendment protects their right to free speech against societal retribution - it does not. The first amendment protects your right to free speech against the government. In other words, the government cannot stretch you on the rack for saying something crazy. This does not protect you from society at large thinking you're an a-hole.

First of all, human rights are not up for popular vote. You don't get to decide what other people's rights are. Second, as far as Brendan Eich, he spoke and there was backlash. People are free to react however (within the bounds of lawful discourse) they want to someone who says something they don't like. That's what maintains the free speech you are referring to. Besides, aren't conservatives always championing the idea that private companies can hire/fire whomever they wish? He can just "go get another job" if he doesn't fit in with the Mozilla culture, right?

LOL, the Glaad thugs were probably using his 'baby' to character assassinate him. The irony.

He was drafted by Mozilla's BOD because they were frustrated in their search for a CEO who would maintain the openness, inclusiveness and freedom that is at Mozilla's heart. He chose to resign, so the mission of Mozilla was not distracted from its mission.

All for a single $1,000 contribution. Another scalp for the ill-informed, mean, vitriolic and personality-disordered mobs. Are we proud of yourselves?
The muzzling of free speech will be the ruination of Liberty. But who will determine what speech will be allowed, and what speech will not be allowed?

Citizens will be afraid to donate to a cause they believe in. Our entire system of self government is at risk if citizens cannot freely express their views without fear of retribution, not only from government, but other citizens who disagree with those views.

Idiotic organizations like Glaad survive only because we let them. Ignore them, laugh at them, stop feeding them, and they'll shut up and go away. Let the butt hurt screamers scream. When they don't get the attention they want, they'll move on.
It was the company's own employees asking for him to step down.

That Mozilla is a private company makes the entire free speech argument irrelevant. The First Amendment only applies to the government.

That's exactly what we are doing to the Republicans and you're right, it works!

I have not only read it, I understand it. It appears you do not.

I further understand how courts have interpreted it, and also how the Bill of Rights has been applied and applies in this case. Do you? As a foreigner, you may not have done sufficient study.

Man, I just love all the RW critics of the so-called "Nanny State" who now want the "Nanny State" to protect a bigot from the consequences of his actions ... just because he's one of "their" bigots.

He was CEO for only 2 weeks. Mozilla's own employees wanted him to step down as CEO. 3 directors resigned. Clearly they didn't feel he was the right person to lead and represent Mozilla as a company. Just because someone is a good programmer, doesn't mean they will make a good CEO.

Mozilla employees tell Brendan Eich he needs to

Do you have mobs of angry homosexuals terrorising the dust bunnies under your bed too? Get a dustpan.

So, wait...the guy started Mozilla, and invented JavaScript, and I'm supposed to be worried about him?
