17th amendment did that. With help from the 16th, passed at the same time... and for the same purpose.
16th Amendment? Tax day must be just around the corner. And I personally like to have a direct choice in who my Senators are, feel free to stop voting for Senators if you don't like it.

This is coming from a person that does not even understand the reason for why we even have a senate, or its function before the 17th Amendment...

Yes, and they granted white men rights and did not to women and slaves when they wrote the Constitution. The Constitution didn't grant those rights to women and blacks until later through an Amendment.

The Senate represents the state and the 17th Amendment made it so the people living in each state get to vote for their Senator rather than corrupt politicians being able to simply buy a seat to work for special interest groups rather than the state. If your Senator isn't doing their job representing your state, I suggest you vote them out of office.
Who is playing the race card? It is a known fact that blacks weren't even considered a whole person in the Constitution, and women were basically considered property. Have you even read the Constitution? This is all in there.
