I find myself surprised that this is not a hot topic.

SOURCE

Legislation that would make the Holy Bible the official state book of Louisiana cleared the House Committee on Municipal, Parochial and Cultural Affairs with a vote of 8-5 Thursday afternoon. It will now head to the full House of Representatives for consideration.

I think this is silliness that our tax dollars should not be wasted upon (or in this case, the tax dollars of Louisianans). Let's declare "money tree" as the state tree. And Marie Antoinette as the state flower.

I hope this doesn't start some pathetic trend. Can the adoption of the Communist Manifesto as state book be far behind in about half of the states in our union?

I guess they had to get rid of their last official book after all the pages got colored.

What a waste of time. Why on earth would a state need an official book?

So the legislator can go to church and proclaim he made the Bible the state book and get votes for reelection. A lot of voters dearly care for the religious issues, feeling the government doesn't do enough to promote the Christian religion. Texas and Oklahoma legislators have believed another way of doing this is to post a monument to the Ten Commandments on their state capitol grounds. Perhaps they will be anxious to copy off of what Louisiana did.

Just because it's a state book doesn't mean you have to read it.

Yep.

The official state ANYTHING is not really worth more than the paper on which its official status is proclaimed. State flower, state bird, state whatever. What purpose do they serve? In most cases, none, but in this one...I think StillwaterTownie hit the nail on the head.

There are a lot of religious people in LA, so it doesn't seem a like a surprising choice, other than it's the King James version, which isn't what Catholics use. Aren't there more Catholics in LA?

As long as they don't require people to read it or salute it, I don't think it raises a constitutional issue. But it does confirm my longstanding impression that Louisiana is one of the last places I'd want to live!

Many states have pet rocks...
