No, the Republicans did not have a filibuster-proof majority. Everything Bush and the Republicans tried to do to correct all the Democratic crap from the past was blocked by Dems filibustering! People seem to forget that!

Hell, look at how many Republican states refused the Medicaid expansion. They turned down federal money to help their own needy constituents because it's "too expensive". Because those people are poor, and the poor tend to vote Democrat, so it's in the Republican's best interest if they drop dead like that woman in Florida, I guess.
Of course, those States were smart because they knew that piece of candy dangled on the string from the Feds was short-lived and would disappear within 3 years as I recall. Then the States would have to shoulder the full burden.

Obama is the first president to serve in an age of a relatively robust internet and social media which has unleashed nut jobs who go after Obama 's mother, wife and children. It's unprecedented and despicable, beyond "knucklehead" regardless of who is sitting the oval now or going forward.

The around the clock media existed during Clinton. Hillary was lambasted even after the sex scandal.

No, he isn't. Social media and a robust internet existed before Obama was even a blip on the presidential radar. Bush was lambasted all over the internet on a daily basis by the left, including photo shopped pictures of his head on a hanging corpse. His daughters were the focus of smear campaigns, and even Laura Bush, who is far classier than Michelle Obama will ever be, was the subject of ridicule.

If you think AHA (aka Obama Care) is higher quality, you had to have had one of the worst health insurance policies available. VBG
My group healthcare deductible was and remains the same, $1,000. My PPO plan has always dictated which doctors and hospitals are in network, and thus less costly than using out of network providers. That an MD was in network last year does not mean it will remain so next year. This was true before ACA and remains true.

Insurance has rationed healthcare all along. Those who can and do choose and pay for higher level plans have always had more choices. And those who can pay in full, out of pocket, at the point of service, have the most choices.

What has changed with the ACA is that there is no longer an annual or lifetime cap, pre-existing / existing conditions cannot be excluded and every insured's out of pocket is capped, a trifecta of benefits that did not exist before ACA legislation, for the majority of plans.

You mean, kind of like how they went after Sarah Palin and her children?

County, state and federal governments have been subsidizing healthcare for uninsured and underinsured for decades. Back in the 80's when ERs were mandated to STABILIZE patients, regardless of their ability to pay, the federal government began making Disproportionate Share payments to hospitals to reimburse them for a percentage of bad debt. Medicare has been paying for healthcare of qualified pregnant women, children and the disabled for decades.

Since you mentioned booze and drugs I would not be too surprised if, at some future distant point in time, those who make lousy lifestyle choices were denied healthcare. So much of what ails people is substantially preventable by lifestyle choices.

In the 90's, most people got their news via newspapers and mainstream media.

Every Tom, Dick and Harry did not have a blog. Internet forums were in their infancy. And social media did not exist.

Are there pictures of Sarah's mother, husband and children photoshopped onto pornographic pictures?

I am aware of Michele Backman and ginormous corn dogs. That's very unfortunate but goes with the territory of running for public office. But no one went for her mom, husband and children as has been done to Obama's family. He may be the first but won't be the last.
