Don't all universities require students to have insurance on their own or through the school anyways?

Anyone who didn't know this before certainly knows it now, as it's been discussed ad nauseam here and elsewhere. Which leads to the only real explanation--they don't care about the facts if they get in the way of their bitching and moaning about the ACA and the president.

Liberal government at work... using your tax dollars, of course.

“In the world President Obama lives in, college football teams are now unions, and the government is paying for maternity coverage for 18-year-old boys,” Nebraska senatorial candidate Ben Sasse said in a promotional video called “Pregnant Football Players.”

I don't see this as anything more than exaggeration. Its not even liberal (republicans did this Obama care thing first in Mass).

It requires a basic set of health care rules for all employees of large employers. its a long list of preventative services and items. . . some are gender specific some aren't.

Most likely this college is what is called "ASO" administrative services only or self-insured. So the benefit plan will outline the benefits, and if benefits are defined by gender.

If it is self insured (most larger companies are) than there is no charge. The college would only pay when a person goes to get a particular service. The employer would only pay a charge a fee per service, not for the type of coverage granted. They pay a general administration cost. . .but the claims are paid by the employer. Thus if you have more male employees than females - you might pay less in healthcare but still cover the services when needed.

If it is fully insured. . .than the underwriters will know how many men, how many women, and estimate the use of services. More women. . .means more maternity stuff, you pay more. If you have more men, you might not pay as much.

same calculation goes into how many fat men you have, how many old men you have, how many young women, etc.

In either situation it isn't really realistic that a gender specific coverage would incur extra cost to the employer if the employer hires a lot of "guys".

in simple terms: If they didn't follow healthcare reform and didn't give the boys maternity, its unlikely the price would change. The underwriters and team are paid to accurately assess risk

Because of State and federal laws.....not because of the Free Market.

I had hopes that one day you may come to understand how insurance works....hope has faded.

A group of men.

Men have a penis; women have a vagina.

The reason you are so ignorant is because you don't understand how the healthcare system evolved in the US.

You refuse to admit that legislation enacted at the State and federal level, largely due to the lobbying efforts of a Special Interest Group -- the American Hospital Association -- has shoved your healthcare system into the realm of Soviet-style Command Economics, which has proven to be both destructive and a total failure.

If you knew how insurance works, then you'd know it isn't insurance, rather it's fee-for-service.

No, you didn't.

In the past, individual PPO's didn't include maternity coverage (which was refleccted in the premium) and an HMO did (which was alsp reflected in the premium). Now maternity is in the PPO so if you need to use it, you've got a big deductible to meet first. In the past on an HMO, it was a co-pay (any where from $0-500). The deductibles on the PPO's now could be over $10,000....lol. Thank you ObamaCare.
Wow...someone actually understands. I am impressed.

Yes, for reasons of civil liability......see "spinal meningitis."

Not exactly:

Have you ever purchased individual insurance pre ACA?

Insurers almost ALWAYS offered maternity riders on the individual market prior to the ACA. There was a huge "doughnut" hole after May 2010 when the ACA was signed into law where almost no insurers offered maternity riders. But prior to the ACA, maternity coverage was available as riders to individual policies Where the media bias was when the ACA was debated was they claimed insurers "barred pre existing conditions like a pregnant woman".

Duh? Why should insurers cover pregnant women? They had option to obtain maternity riders on the individual market prior to getting pregnant. Usually a 6-12 month exclusion period. They usually ran around $200/month (in addition to normal premiums). But many women didn't want to pay for it (either being too cheap to pay for it/trying to save money or a combination of who knows what).

So I guess me and my wife were "responsible" when we paid the extra premiums each month to cover maternity coverage while on our individual insurance pre ACA.

The leftists are correct: It pays to be more irresponsible.

This is why individual insurance is more expensive for all those making over 400% of poverty under age 40 under the ACA. It's mainly through the addition of mandatory maternity coverage. "spreading the wealth"

Employees are able to decline group healthcare insurance for a variety of reasons, including obtaining coverage under their parents' plans.

Obamacare to force Northwestern U. to buy maternity coverage for its football players

Katherine Timpf
Reporter@kctimpf on Apr 02, 2014 at 2:09 PM EDT

Northwestern University will have to pay for maternity coverage for any of its football players who enroll in Obamacare.

Northwestern became the first school in the nation to deem its players full-time employees last Wednesday. Because the school team has more than 50 employees, it also qualifies as a “large” employer, and therefore must offer pregnancy-related care to the all-male team, according to an article in Rare. As full-time employees, the team will also be able to vote on whether or not to unionize.

“In the world President Obama lives in, college football teams are now unions, and the government is paying for maternity coverage for 18-year-old boys,” Nebraska senatorial candidate Ben Sasse said in a promotional video called “Pregnant Football Players.”

Why are you so called "pro-lifers" against prenatal care?
