You see the purpose of a true flat tax is to raise tax revenues. You will capture enough revenue from the rich to pay for social services the poor need.
So the excuse the poor cannot afford flat taxes is blunted by revenue raised to find social safety net programs.

This type system would hurt the poor and help the rich.
Which, as you know, is precisely the point of the so-called fair tax, flat tax, and sales tax proposals. It's mind-boggling that the extreme right wing has convinced so many people who would be hurt by these ideas to support them.
Try to understand your own question before wasting our time with posts like this.
The amount of tax to be collected and the method used to collect it are two entirely different and unrelated things. If you want to argue that our taxes are too high, start by identifying a substantial number of the services you receive from the government should be eliminated.

yup, the devil is in the details -- mainly of how wealth is taxed. (e.g. whether stocks and real estate would be taxable under a sales tax, or how those transactions would be taxed under a flat tax)
and they have done a good job of obscuring the details.
This type system would hurt the poor and help the rich. The rich don't NEED to buy many items and can survive without the yearly Benz or BMWs and can curtail spending to a pauper level if they really wanted to. Some do that already, read The Millionaire Next Door and Stop Acting Rich. The issue is those who live on pauper wages, cannot really change their ways. They can't sell their house while a rich person could just buy a modest house rather than their traditional McMansion and pay less in tax. That tax logic causes more issues than it is worth.
Oh cry me a river about the poor, everything hurts the poor according to some of you people. B.S. about the rich people don't spend a lot of money. Why do you think so many of these athletes and entertainers go broke? They love to spend moeny. You don't think Bill Gates and Paul Allen love to Spluge on Mansions and Yachts and their private jets. Paul Allen owns a yacht that looks like a damn ocean liner. Ted Turner at one point owned land larger than the states of Delware and Road Island combined! I'm even not going to mention all the rich drug dealers/organized crime figures who also like to blow money(money that doesn't get tax under the current system) that would be taxed if we had a national sales tax.
Get rid of all the taxes(including the fascist IRS) and have a national sales tax. That way ALL money gets tax, including all the money floating around on the black market(i.e. drugs, gambling, prostitution, etc.) no loop holes, no deductions.
I'm leaning toward a flat tax, but this isn't a bad idea either.
Yes they did make lives miserable over $68B, why? For political agenda of dragging people threw the mud..
To hell with them, We can cut of benefits to illegals and build a fence that will save us about 130,000,000,000$ a year...
If we cut the bennies off, as well as crack down on employers in this country who hire them, we more than likely wouldn't need that fence. No more bennies, or the ability to get hired under the table by employers reduces their incentive to come here, and therefore they will actually have to try and work to make their own country a better place to live. Also, as Ron Paul said, that fence that we want, may actually work to keep us in.
