In my opinion, this is really stupid. I doubt whether the entire state is going to raise the minimum wage, so why can't local municipalities make their own rules? If having living wages or insurance is a problem for some businesses, can't they move out of the locality? Isn't that what the free market is?

Well this is an Oklahoma problem, but I wouldn't mind seeing another Republican lose their job over doing a stupid political act like this. .

The new law also bars localities from requiring that employees receive a certain number of sick or vacation days, either paid or unpaid.

Oklahoma, moving back to the feudal era, one step at a time. What a bunch of cretins.

Meanwhile, 25% of Oklahomans were on food stamps during 2011, an 84% increase since 2002.

Maybe their government should be worried about bigger things than trying to keep wages low in the state. GOP governors seem to be trying to create third world standards in some of our states, before you know it we could just open up sweatshop factories in the US for the people living in shanty towns in GOP states.

This is funny. Usually, the crazy leftists are all for big, central government taking away freedoms from smaller governments that are closer to the people. Now, all of the sudden, the crazy leftists are outraged by it.

What if some municipality wants to enact a lower minimum wage than the rest of the state? Should that be permitted? Or in that case, does the statewide preemption law suddenly go from being 'really stupid' to really smart.

Which introduces a question, do you think this is wrong for the state to do?

Here's a funny story that I ran across today. Working America is a union-backed non-profit org that is promoting the $15/hr minimum wage. They have an office here in Seattle, and recently posted a help-wanted ad. Their starting wage: $12.25/hr.

All I see is that Oklahoma says its up to the STATE government to determine minimum wage and not cities or towns... nowhere does it "ban" minimum wage... but I guess its better to deceive than to be honest...
