He didin't bring a weapon onto school property, it was a pocket knife, a common tool that normal people have carried for centuries. The tire iron in the truck is more of a weapon than a 3" pocket knife.
I bet scissors will be next. Then staplers, shoe laces (strangling hazard), shoes (could kick someone), neckties (suicidal hanging)... The possibilities are endless for a zealous prosecutor.
The young man did not go to jail for breaking school rules. No, nope, nyet. Some other law(s) was/were broken. The worst the school could do is expel. And oh, there is that little matter of the gun, too.
