Tonight being 27 years since the tragic murder of John Lennon, I began thinking about how powerful music was to bring about social change during the 60's and 70's.
Could there ever be another John Lennon type figure in this day and age? I seriously think not. And I also think there is more to the reason... that almost all of today's spoonfed mainstream music is nothing but idiotic garb.
Possible lesson's learned, you know? The last thing the American gov't needs is the mobilization of the young through music. Not saying there is a big "conspiracy" to keep it all under wraps... but it surely is convienant to have the masses focused on "American Idol" and trash rap music, of course...
And.. I'm not nessecerily saying that all was right with the music and a lot of the scene that came with it several decades ago - surely there was a ton of idiocy that got off the on to the wrong side streets... but I do think the fundamental ideals were on the right track... especially those of John Lennon.
I look forward to the hardcore "righties" to pounce on this one. Have at it.
Just throwing it all out there.........
And on the topic, I highly recommend a film that came out last year - that is available on dvd called "The U.S. vs. John Lennon". An incredibly relevant piece, considering the day and age we live in.
Good thread!
John Lennon had many interesting ideas and could well promote them due to his popularity. Small wonder he's been killed.
Today is also the birthday of Jim Morrison in 1943, also one who had unusual ideas and influence. His death still remains a mystery.
The current music menagerie doesn't have much to offer for ideas, creativity, or originality. But there are some interesting people making music which is mostly played on college stations.
