The degree in basket weaving will sure as heck get you a good paying gig!
But... but... they want to follow their dreams! Art History! Women's Studies! Philosophy! (Last time I checked there's a philosopher on every bar stool in town, and an art history major hands me my coffee every morning.)
Both my daughter and son lived at home after graduating college. They both moved out after they had saved enough money to purchase a home. My daughter moved out at 28 (3 years ago) and my son moved out at 27, which was last year.
The year my daughter moved out, I retired. My job is done. Well, it's kind of done.
This isn't 1965 anymore. Jobs are being consolidated across the country into major metro centers, pushing up the cost of living even in formerly affordable southern states. Couple that with the fact that the purchasing power of the dollar is far lower than it was in the 1960s, fewer jobs that don't pay well, etc., and you have the perfect recipe for young people to stay with their parents. Also, it's demographics as well. The culture of moving out as soon as possible after turning 18 is mostly practice by those of northern European descent in the USA (this is far less common in northern Europe, where the average house price is about as much as New Jersey). People of southern European descent, latinos, and Asians all find it normal and acceptable for kids to stay with their parents, even after marriage
The culture of moving out of parents' home when you grow up is a first world culture. It will make it much easier for people to accept low wages when they never grow up and move away.
You can have 40 year olds living like 16 year olds, mom and dad pay the housing and utility bills, ageing junior can compete with the 16 year olds for fast food and other minimum wage jobs.
Its really not that unusual in American or other countries histories ;if one looks. I think the stats on lifetime earnings and unemployment outs the stop to non-sense talk. about degrees long ago.
