Byrd died four years ago.

In the 40s, Senator Byrd said

I will concede that in 2005 he said

An apology, but I'm not sure he is fit to serve office because of his past affiliations (sort of like CEOs of web browsers).

Maybe Democrats can explain this? Thanks!
You're asking an internet forum. The voters of WV hold the answer you're looking for.

No, I think the original question stands. Why did the Democrats continue to support Robert Bryd when in 2001, just nine years before his death, he used a racial slur on national tv. I know this thread is old, but that old bigot was given a pass by not only the voters of West Virginia but by the Democratic party itself. Why?

Pose your question to the chairman of the Democratic Party, then.

Update us with the response.

That will happen when Hell freezes. Apparently, their hypocrisy knows no bounds.

2001? Hell, Democrats much more recently supported Reid's and Biden's racist comments.

"He [Reid] was wowed by Obama's oratorical gifts and believed that the country was ready to embrace a black presidential candidate, especially one such as Obama -- a 'light-skinned' African American 'with no Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one,' "
Reid apologizes for racial remarks about Obama during campaign - CNN.com

And...

Joe Biden's racist slip - YouTube

It's so commonplace with them that they blurt these gems out without thinking, and don't even apologize until called out on it.

Many politicians realize their mistakes and change over time, even George Wallace. I think Byrd realized his mistake's back in the 1940's and changed.

Since we are going in the wayback machine a better question would be why Georgia and other states elected people like Lester Maddox back in the 1960's.

Bryd used the phrase "white ------" on March 4, 2001! On national tv. Please do not give him a pass.

I don't give him a pass, it was a mistake and he apologized, he made that reference relative to white people, still a big mistake..

Why is this important 12 years later, have there been no other racially motivated statements.
