These types of swings happen - it's a cyclical thing as history has shown us (remember the McCarthy era - egad that was bad).

Oh, I forgot about NASA. I am actually in favor of NASA even though I know a lot of conservatives are not. I think space, being a genuine new area of exploration is worth it to spend Federal dollars on but I know a lot of my fellow party members disagree. Of course, I'm a bit of a science geek so that may be another reason why.
Oh oh! DARPA! Also created by Eisenhower, although becoming more prominent in the early 90's.

I think NASA is going to outdone by companies finally such as SpaceX, NASA has done amazing things, but its now time to hand off to private companies for space launches, and move NASA back into various planetary research rovers, and deep space research.

For near space, yes, but I am very much in favor of continuing our exploration of Mars, deep space telescopes, and other endeavors. DARPA is sometimes misunderstood but at the end of the day, it saves us money in military spending by utilizing smarter weaponry and defense tools, especially in the asymmetric warfare we now face.

Unfortunately there are some things that the private sector cannot and will not provide. Basic infrastructure is one of those things. The capital costs are too high and the return is through the economic activity it enables. Heck, we have the best freight rail system in the world because the Federal Government GAVE the right-of-ways to the railroads. Just imagine the regional passenger rail system this country would have if we'd done the same today.

In France and Japan the government builds the roads and the trains are run by private operators like airlines. Governments in Africa are doing the same with 4G networks and internet. While here in the US we're passing laws to prohibit local governments from building their own broadband networks.

This is the list of things our federal government is allowed to involve itself in...

No it does not. It gets permanently offset. SS, Medicare, Income tax, etc. Those are never reversed.

You certainly can go some motion in the other direction...Bush tax cuts, Welfare reform...but no reset.

The first two will bankrupt themselves or the nation, the law of economics is quite clear on this.
