I can't tell you how many people i have come across that believe attractive women are likely to be raped.
Also, many people believe that petite women are more likely to be raped.

City Data is esp ripe with the above myths.

Where do people get these ideas from?

I thought everyone knew that rape is about power?

Yes it is about power and control. I've noticed that crimes that get a lot of publicity are the ones with attractive young women as the victims and they are usually petite so maybe that is why.

Yeah,i know.

There needs to be some type of public announcement that states everyone is a potential victim, regardless of age, sex, size, and income.

I'd say attractive women are more likely to be raped, but it can happen to anyone. I'm a burly dude in my 20s and I've been molested (though not raped) before.

While the possibility exists for anyone to be raped, it's not a myth that attractive women are more likely to be raped. Rapists have a number of motivations and MOs. So while rape is often a crime of power and control, we can't ignore that it has a sexual element to it as well. Sometimes it's about sex, not control.

Ironically though, in a thread about rape myths, we're speaking about women as the typical victim. As men are raped more often than women in the U.S., might we be perpetuating a myth of our own?

Rape is about more than "power," though. If it were just about power, perpetrators would be more or less evenly distributed across gender, and things like castration/emasculation would have no effect on rape rates (since, after all, castrati still want power as much as anyone else).

People like my husband also believe that provocative, low-cut clothing is an invitation to rape. He just will not let go of this thinking.

The fact is that women in their 80's and even 90's have been raped. Do these women also "ask for it"? Definitely not!! Rape is about power and control expressed in a sexual manner.

You should listen to your husband; he's right.
You need to understand that there are different types of rapes, and rapists. A violent, predatory rapist will often choose his victim based on opportunity/vulnerability more than anything else, regardless of what she may look like, or be wearing(i.e. the elderly). A rapist who takes advantage of a girl in a bar or at a frat party however, is another type of offender, and chooses his victims in a different manner. And yes, dressing provocatively and/or behaving in a certain manner will in fact make a woman more likely to be a victim in such a scenario.
Maybe that's unfair. In a perfect world, a woman can dress and act however she pleases without risk of being assaulted. But we don't live in that world.

There is a huge difference between that and an "invitation to rape."

Do you think it's possible that this myth exists because more attractive women are more likely to have more friends and therefore more men in their lives who are friends, acquaintances, dates or boyfriends, who might get an opportunity to rape them?
