This is the sad state of some universities today. Rutgers gave $32,000 to have Snooki speak on campus, and more than a thousand showed up to applaud her speech on hair and partying.
But when the Rutgers invited Condoleeza Rice to speak for graduation (at a cost similar to Snooki's- $35,000), a liberal professor led the charge to shut down that speech.

Here's some info from Rice's past speeches:
Quote:
She told students the story of how she came to value education so dearly. Tracing her roots to her grandfather, the son of a sharecropper in Alabama, and her experiences growing up in the segregated South, she reminded students that America still thrives “despite the fact that when the Founding Fathers said, ‘We the people,’ they didn’t mean me.”
Rice reminded them that they have responsibilities as they go out into the world: to follow their passion, to rely on reason, to remain humble and charitable, and to be optimistic.
As the left wing Daily Beast notes:
Quote:
You know, all the usual saber-rattling and warmongering. Humility! Optimism! Heaven forbid we pollute young minds with such right-wing neocon propaganda!
How sad that the professors and students who welcomed Snooki with open arms and $32,000 see no value in a black woman who rose from segregation to become the first black Secretary of State.

Snooki may not have much on here mind but she does not have the blood of hundreds of thousands of people on her hands. Good for Rutgers!

Anderson Cooper had a great take on this.

To say nothing of her other accomplishments! She is also an accomplished concert pianist! She is a brilliant woman, and one they should have been proud to have address them.

It's too bad that it was only a small minority of students and faculty that objected. But Rice chose not to interfere with with anyone's enjoyment and celebration of their special day. That is the kind of person she is.

Do you understand the difference between honorary degree recipients/speakers and general university speakers?

She is brilliant and has led a very interesting life, including the civil rights era. Bravo for Ms. Rice for choosing not to lower herself to the protestors mentality. Shame on Rutgers. Having Snooki as a speaker does not speak well for the quality of education at Rutgers.

I extremely disappointed that these faculty members found the energy to object to Ms. Rice rather than A Snookie.

Ridiculously stupid.

Dr. Rice, despite my feelings about her Iraq War role, is a perfect invitee for something like this. She's lovely, smart, and a good example of a great American.
