Let's try this. If you saw someone on your driveway trying to steal your car. Would you shoot him even it is clear he just wants the car?

Would you kill to defend your property?
If someone has the guts to break in with you home inside, they aren't usually there to hold hands.....know that as fact.

Now I'm sure being burgled is traumatic, but is it really a greater evil than killing an intruder? Especially if there was no reason to do so aside from revenge? If so why not treat it the same as murder if apparently it's equally serious and make it a capital crime you can be executed for?
You said old men vs teenager, in a fight who would win in most cases. Unless the thief was out of the house and absolutely no threat, then you might have an argument. If the sleazy scumbag this is still in the house, a threat still exists.

Of course it's ok to use lethal force if someone does a home invasion at your home, not only is it ok, but it is the prudent thing to do. If you take the time to evaluate the intentions of an assailant, or surprise assailants, it could be too late and you find yourself watching your wife and daughter get raped and beaten before they are stabbed to death.

It depends on what threat the person presents to the people in the home he is invading.

First of all, when you stumble upon an intruder in your home, you have no clue why they are there, or what their intentions are. They may just be a petty thief, or they may be a rapist of women, an abuser of children, or into the sex slave business, you just do not know.

Secondly, their mere presence in your home tells you a lot about them. They have no concern or respect for your rights or the law.

Seems too risky, at least for me. By having to opening the door and running downstairs, the burglar will already know exactly where you are coming from, and will have time to aim the gun at you first.

We had a couple methheads who kept breaking into this elderly mans house to rob him. They kicked the front door in at least twice before and beat him up during the heists. The old man went out and bought himself a 1911 .45 ACP. The third time he was waiting for them and ambushed them. He shot and killed the intruders. It never even went to court.

What state is this in? Sadly that would probably never fly in California. :-/

Actually, the homeowner has the tactical advantage in their own home.

What is risky is having no ability to defend your family in your own home.

No. I wouldn't shoot someone stealing the car from my driveway. I also wouldn't shoot someone if I pulled up and they were running out the door with my TV. I couldn't care less about my property. That's what insurance is for.

But if they enter any part of my home when I'm there, I really don't have any intention of asking them why they broke in. I'm going to shoot them.

Please keep in mind, I spent several years in a scout/sniper unit in the paratroopers and I fought in Iraq. I'm not interested in ever shooting anyone again. But I wouldn't hesitate to defend my home. Trust me when i tell you that the decision to kill is almost always made in milliseconds. There isn't a lot of time to analyze the situation or assess the threat completely. A lot of guys are at home with their families right now because guys like me worked quickly. If someone enters my home uninvited, they are going to end up on the wrong side of the dirt. Their choice, not mine.
