Government has been shedding a lot of jobs, but of course it is not just about the number of government workers, but the overall spending. Unfortunately neither party is willing to cut their pet projects.
Or audit existing ones to get spending back under control.
Lifeline got audited and 41% of those free phone subscribers got kicked out of the program because they didn't qualify.
Imagine if that were done to the other 83 social welfare programs ?
Thanks to lower overall spending and higher tax receipts, Treasury took in $114 billion more than it had to pay out in April, the Congressional Budget Office said.
The U.S. Treasury Department booked a $114 billion surplus in April, the largest for that month since 2008, according to the latest estimates from the Congressional Budget Office released Wednesday.
For the first seven months of this fiscal year, which began on Oct. 1, the CBO estimates the country has racked up a $301 billion deficit, which is $187 billion lower than it was for the same period last year.
Federal coffers saw a 7% increase in individual income taxes and payroll taxes, a 15% increase in corporate income taxes, and a 37% increase in money paid to Treasury by the Federal Reserve.
This happens every year, April through July/August we run surpluses because of tax revenue. Then the rest of the year we break even or run deficits.

Well, in 2003, we created a Cabinet department that we didnt need, directly employing 70,000 people (plus another 140,000 from the agencies with in it(FEMA for example)).

The FedGov has a lot of overlap and redundancy.
We have seven different milk programs and they are all run by different groups.
Why ?
And that last milk program is the "Special Milk Program" for those that couldn't qualify for the other 6
No one celebrated the 1qt growth numbers, and no one celebrates deficits. The point, which escapes you, is that deficits are down 40%, which indicates we are going in the right direction. I worry about deficits, but I'd worry far more if deficits were still growing. Wouldn't you?
Here, I'll type s l o w e r .... It's not the right direction!!!! -
We are increasing taxes by 7% to 15% on the people, while we are in a no growth economy!!!!!! Sorry, but sucking the money out of the economy to satiate the out of control spending by our government is not the right direction!
The GAO sends Obama a reports detailing hundreds of billions in waste, that is where we need to cut, but we are instead cutting into the profits and paychecks of the people and celebrating high income tax revenue.
Growing the economy is where we need to focus, not Obama's global warming agenda, not comprehensive immigration reform, and add to all of this, we have the massive, destructive and dysfunctional ACA bringing down the economy.
The only way that a surplus or surge in tax revenue should be looked upon as "heading into the right direction," is if that revenue was the result of a booming economy.

Every year the GAO bangs the same drum, and every year this president and Congress find more ways to ignore it and spend our money and to hell with the economy

No, they do not have $114 billion surplus every April. For example in 2009, 2010, and 2011 there was no surplus at all.
