Does the term Czar of All the Russias mean anything to you. All these places you meantion were part of the Worlds largest contiguous Empires. It got its start in the Ukraine when a Rus Chieften in Kiev accepted Eastern Rite Christianity and St Cyril created a way to write in their lanuage. This happened in the 10th Century AD. The state that arose basically im the Ukraine was Kievian Russia. In the 13th century Kievian Russia had the misfortune of being run over by the Mongols who destroyed Kiev and butchered most of its inhabitants. A few escaped and ended up in a obscure out of the way Principallity called Muscovy. From this we get Great Russia which by the 15th century was strong enough to break the power of the Mongols and begin to assemble all the remaining Russian principalites into what became an Empire. The Russians reached the Arctic, the Urals and then kept going East until they reached the Pacific. In Eastern Europe the Russians were held at bay by what used toi be powerful states like Lithuania and Poland. At this time most of the Ukraine was controlled by Lithuania and then Poland. This explans why a lot of Ukrainians are Catholic rather than Eastern Orthodox. The Southern coast of Ukrain and the Crimea were ruled by the Ottoman Turks who made the Black Sea a Turkish Lake. In the 17th and 18th Century two strong Czars one a man the other a women destroyed the Poles, pushed the Ottomans out of the Crimea and Odessa and brought the Ukraine back into Russian Control where it remained for the next 3 centuries with short interuptions in 1918-20 and 1941-1944. Historically Russia has controlled the Ukraine longer than the USA has existed as a nation.

Excellent summation, but it's pearls before swine here.

You do know by quoting Israel, that they and the US took in 100,000s of Jews in the 70's FROM that region and resettled them. You do know that 1/3 of Poland was annexed by the USSR in 1939 after 3 Million Jews were forcibly removed (and killed) from that land to create Ukraine and Belarus. Thus many were not forced to move to the Ukraine, many moved there because a large part of the population that lived near the sea were gone leaving 1000's of homes empty.

I think the OP asks an excellent question.

How would we Americans feel if all these Mexican immigrants started calling for annexation of parts of our country to Mexico? I would feel that they are enemy, foreign agents here with an agenda.

I'm sure my left wing friends on this board would probably support their efforts and blame it on whitey for taking the land to begin with, but those of us with functioning brains would probably want them out of the country.

You do know that a large part of the west coast still carry the same names of cities from when they were part of Mexico. Why don't look up how the US got the land before making such un-researched and racist comments.

Uh; that kind of stuff was def Ok 150 years ago, it wouldn't fly in 2014 like the mess in the Ukraine. Besides: Mexico did the same thing to Spain but no 1 talks about "returning" Mexico to them. Sheesh!

The ethnic Russians know they can get away with anything because if the Ukraine does anything to stop them, Russia will claim that their fellow Russians are being terrorized and invade the Ukraine. Even hinting at mass-deportation would be branded as ethnic terrorism by Russia.

What the Ukraine needs is a huge game changer. They need to make themselves an unappealing target for Vladimir Putin's empire building. I think this would about do it:

A.) Massive and sudden deployment of NATO forces -- primarily the European ones. (They're backyard, they're responsibility.)

B.) Once those forces are solidly in place, the Ukraine immediately joins the European Union and NATO.

C.) If Russia wants to make a fuss, the Ukraine just has to point out the Crimea land-grab. Obviously, Ukraine needed protection from Russia's bullying.

The only problem is that the EU nations are too timid to do it. But if they did this, the Ukraine could deal with their ethnic Russian problems without fear of Russian invasion. I think the ethnic Russians should be given the choice: Stay and be a productive part of the Ukraine or leave and go be part of Russia. Most of those ethnic Russians have their entire life inside the Ukraine. They have homes, jobs, businesses and everything else there. The vast majority would stay.

If you consider Mexico as part of South America, Spain was historically the aggressor. How do you think Spanish got there since it didn't exist before the Spaniards arrived and over time wiped out 75% of the indigenous population?

Timid is being kind. They will do nothing. Ask any person on the street anywhere in the EU and the first sentence out of their mouths will include: The Americans will step in and.....

If people in Vermont wanted to join Canada, we'd say, "See ya!" We certainly wouldn't let Canada have the land.
