If there ever was a more tailored study group for a technology I don't know of one. All cops carry guns (openly or concealed), all cops may be dispossessed of their weapons during the course of executing their duties, all cops may be required to fire their weapons in the defense of self or others under all conditions that any civilian could need to use a weapon in.
What's more we already pay for them.
Finally of course if a firearm is good enough to protect the president, then it should be good enough for me to protect myself with. If the president, or Secret Service are not comfortable either being protected by, or protecting with this technology, then it needs some more baking time.
Exactly. Cops face a similar threat of criminal violence as common citizens. The only difference is in probabilities. Whatever cops are carrying to defend themselves is what I want to carry to defend myself and my loved ones from criminal violence.
Cops these days are pretty savvy and progressive when it comes to guns and gun training. As much of a cop-hater as I am, I will still give them their due. When cops are on board with 'smart guns' I'll be on board, too.
I expect my firearms to fire as reliably 40 years from now as they day it was manufactured.
Obsolescence and future costs is another issue. I think my greatest concern at the present is being able to jam it if it uses RF. That's probably why the police are unwilling to take it on, it would only be matter of time before devices like that showed up.
The free market should be able to decide that on their own, preventing this device from going to market is not the answer.
But it's a mandate and that is anything but a free market, I'd suggest you contact the NJ state legislators and insist they get rid of the mandate to let the free market reign.

Playing devil's advocate, don't be too sure RF jammers for these would show up. FCC takes a very dim and heavy stance on jammers of any type. I'm not sure about targeted-interference devices that perhaps transmit a false signal, I don't know the legalities of them, and really don't have a reason to go looking, but I'd think that a targeted device would have shown up for police radar now and there aren't any.

I wasn't thinking along the lines you'd be able to go into Wal Mart and buy one. If the police were required to use smart guns there would certainly be a black market for such a device especially if they could be made cheaply.
Just crazy and over zealous policies. Let me clue you in. Criminals will by pass any system to gain access to weapons.
