If there was a time machine and they could stop slavery before it happened, how many African Americans would say stop it? That would mean that most likely they would not be American citizens?

How many would opt for a future without being a citizen of this country? Hmmm....

What about black slave owners, do their descendants pay money too?

What about Indian slave owners, are they on the hook as well?

Are the ancestors of Union soldiers, killed in the war to end slavery, entitled to reparations?

Are we able to charge the descendants of the African's who sold the slaves as well? Wouldn't this bankrupt numerous West African countries who supplied the slaves?

Also, will the money be prorated based on the % of white admixture?

What will this money buy us?

How would this affect the black community? In say, one or two generations would this close "the gap"? Would the soft bigotry of low expectations finally be gone from the black psyche?

Great post, great points.............it would be a nightmare figuring-out who to pay and how much.

Sure, pay all former slaves lost wages. Each of them. Any uncompensated hours he/she put in prior to the Civil War could be tabulated and paid at the going rate for the time. All we need do now is contact the former slaves and notify them of their settlement.

Do you know of any good mediums? We can deduct the cost of the séance from the settlement. Should said former slaves be uninterested in claiming their settlements from the other side, we can then use that cash to fund the badly needed psychological help for those who wish to grant settlements to people over 100 years dead.

I'm sure at least one of those black slaves was gay. So whenever that was.

I say he's entitled just as much. Maybe more.

Let's pay one-time reparations and then end all the welfare programs.

Blacks who are held back are only held back because the system is designed to hold them back. Most blacks outside of the worst inner cities are as normal as anyone else. Just remember that there are whites from the inner cities, also.

What was that African country called that actually apologized here in the US for slavery? Can we get them on the phone and send them part of this bill?

Do we only pay reparations to the roughly 400,000 slaves that were brought to the US and go from there?

What about black Americans who are descended from Caribbean and South American slaves? You know, where the vast majority of slaves went to?

How about all the northerners who profited (textile mills) off of the slave trade?

Can we track down the New England shippers of Slaves as well?

How do we come about a monetary value? Do we compare what black Americans would be making back in their home countries to what they are making (in this horrific land of no opportunity and white privilege) here in the states? Make up THAT difference?

Will all this money make a difference in the 13% of a population make up over 50% of it's crime conundrum? I'd be willing to pay in to have that go down significantly even though I'm only a 3rd generation American. Will illegal immigrants have to pay as well?

Of course it's ludicrous and they don't expect to get any money - it's an election year and the most reliable part of the Democratic "base" is not "fired up" to vote.

The National Pivot from Gays to Race is all about the Mid Term election - it's a "get out the vote" ploy, just like Uncle Joe Biden's speech in 2012 about "they gonna put y'all back in chains" was.

The media does Obama's bidding. He meets with them often to instruct them how to control the discourse in this nation. That's why global warming, gun control, and gay marriage are front and center in the media while most of America are more concerned about job security and other practical things that affect them personally.

Quite honestly IMHO it is the other way round.

Obama really is wishy-washy without much of a backbone and therefore easily malleable. Hollywood/the entertainment industry, media including news have always exerted forces on American society. They are now joined by banking/finance, the technology sector and a few others at the table. For years some or all have access to the WH (remember Jack Valenti and the Digital Millennium Copyright Act among other things), but with a president like Obama it is like shooting fish in a barrel.

The Sunday NYT magazine ran a feature a few weeks ago about Obama's "evolution" on SSM and his subsequent becoming one of the biggest champions of the movement. Interesting reading as it tells of how he was "gotten to" so to speak but then again his commitment against gay marriage wasn't that strong to begin with in the first place.

As for the rest the media has many more outlets thanks to technology and therefore can get their message out and or influence public discourse in ways unthinkable ten or twenty years ago. In the 1970's if someone in power didn't want an article or something done shining a favourable or unfavorable light, they knew who to contact and what strings to pull. That isn't so easy today anymore.
