Given that no one on the left changes his mind, and no one on the right changes his mind, and people in the middle don't really become either lefties or righties...

What is the point of even having a politics forum?

That is a secret kept only by the NSA.

It's so a bunch of people can tell the world how correct they think they are.

Just like I'm doing now.

Well, I don't think it is true that no one ever changes. I would say that there is some hope for some people to change. But they probably need to be at least somewhat introverted, and you need to slam them with as many facts as possible. Especially things which aren't normally known. Force them to think and rationalize.

Calling them names or just declaring they are wrong is a waste of time.

Of course, a major problem with this forum in particular, is that most of the people are very much older, and older people tend to be much more "set in their ways". Anyone over the age of 60 or so is basically a lost cause. And somewhere between a third and a half of all regular posters here are in their golden years and have nothing better to do than post here all day.

I tend to try to stick to debates with substance. I try to ignore anyone who writes one-sentence posts. And just hope that there is someone else like me who thinks its important for things to actually "make sense". You know, understanding with your brain rather than just feeling with your heart.

I came here a liberal. And now I would consider myself somewhere between anarcho-socialist and anarcho-capitalist. Of course, I came here nearly 5 years ago. Spent the first year being a liberal, spent the next year being something of a national-socialist, spent the next year as a libertarian, then the next year heading towards minarchist, then spent the last year heading slowly towards full anarchist.

Had I heard myself talking now, 5 years ago, I would have thought I was insane and anti-American. And I would have shrugged off almost everything I had to say as "selfish".

How do you know how old posters are???

I do agree with part of your post.

As a young person I was liberal.....I remember thinking the government should just give everyone some money.

Then I got a job......and a pay check.....and I realized that was MY money the government took.....that was the first corner I turned.

There was many more after that.

I was the same way. Idealistic and wanting to change the world. Then I got a decent paying job and when I saw how much was yanked to give to some deadbeat.................well that was my turning point.

Entertainment. Have you SEEN some of the crazy things people say in this forum? The best Hollywood writers couldn't make this stuff up.

I'd like to know how you arrived at that conclusion.

Well, there are usually subtle clues they leave. They don't normally come out and say their age, but they'll talk about "when they were growing in in the 50's" or how they "graduated college in 1970" or "I was a high school senior when Kennedy was assassinated."

If you start sorting through the more regular posters, you'll see a much older than average group of people. And the people that I personally debate with the most, are almost always much much older.

But with that said, I really only remember people's names who I have argued with quite a bit. And I tend to not argue with people who don't have much to say. So my definition of "regular poster" is probably a much more narrow band of people than what there actually is.

I assume for instance that you are in your mid 50's. You are still working, and you don't seem to be quitting work anytime soon. You have invested a lot of time and energy into your business. But you seem to be in a position to be somewhat relaxed about things. So I would assume retirement isn't that far away.

There are some "kids" who post here as well. "TheUnidentifiedMale" for instance is probably in his late 20's or early 30's.
