Same news analyzed by Al Jazeera give you a better picture. The elderly are at greater risk. By the way, regarding uninsured motorists paying for your injuries, many accidents around here are hit and run.
"Walking on America’s streets may be hazardous to your health, especially if you’re a senior or minority living in the Sun Belt.
Southern cities that grew and sprawled after World War II in the heyday of the automobile are the most dangerous places for pedestrians...
One in five pedestrian accidents kills older Americans, a group that has the greatest pedestrian fatality rate. It’s a problem that could get worse, said Nancy LeaMond, executive vice president for social impact at AARP.
“Eight million people no longer drive,” LeaMond said. “Too many seniors cannot safely walk … You should not need the speed of a major league baseball player to cross our streets.”
Vehicle speed is a major factor. About 61 percent of pedestrian deaths were on roads with speed limits of 40 mph or higher, while 9 percent were on roads with speed limits below 30 mph.
Has anyone thought of placing speed cameras and banning cell phones? Here the posted speed is 30mph but the real speed is often 40 or 50mph. Funny that those most affected are also the most involved in voting. I wonder if the elderly realize they can use that power for something good: Their own safety. The sidewalks are full of safety hazards, too many dangerous crossings are not properly marked. IT'S A JUNGLE.
MY state already has posted speed cameras and has banned cellphones while driving due to studies showing they're just as accident prone as drunk drivers. Distracted driving is a real problem. Oh, and much of this has to do with just bad urban design, especially in the south (but also found in other parts of the country) where bicyclists and pedistrians are often just not even taken into account. Hell, I've seen whole cities where they didn't even bother to build sidewalks because they wanted to save money and figured only poor people walk. It's sad.
Wait, banning cell phones while driving? No, nobody has ever thought of that!!!! You're an absolute genius!!!! Let's ban people from driving while their drunk too. And, we should probably ban people from driving while they are tired. You know this banning thing is brilliant. I'm calling my Congresswoman and asking her to ban all crime too, that way it will never happen.
Who'd have thought totally doing away with the way humans have settled for tens-of thousands of years and giving cars precedence over pedestrians would have consequences? Baby Boomers are finding out that sealing themselves in a subdivision with no sidewalks and nowhere to get to without the use of a car might have been a bad idea once they can no longer drive.
There's a reason why developers can't build condos and apartments in cities and walkable college towns fast enough, and it isn't just young childless hipsters.

Unicorns.
Well, driving while on the phone is more dangerous than DUI's.
You draw your conclusions right there, and see why the rest of the civilized world bans them.
