Throughout history, for many, it was the only health care people could get. there were also Public Service hospitals before Reagan disbanded them. Not because they didn't work, but because they saved money. It wasn't until WWII and after that employers were offering health insurance as a perk as there was a labor shortage.
I find the outrage from congress hypocritical as they jump on the bandwagon, they had information for over a decade that problems existed what was their reaction. They had reports in front of them from the IG documenting the problems yet they did nothing, they need to take a look in the mirror.
Firing Shinseki does nothing but provide a convenient scape goat while doing noting to address the core problems, maybe he should be fired at some point but congress needs to come up with a coherent plan to address the issues.

"It's not that people haven't brought this up before, it's just the word
'secret' lists blew it up in the media," Vietnam Veterans of America's Richard
Weidman said in an interview. "They weren't secret, they were handwritten" logs
kept aside from computerized scheduling. "People should stop the hysteria and
say what the root of this problem is."
The problem, according to Weidman and several other veteran service organizations, is there are not enough medical personnel to meet the demand for VA health care. Several of the groups have complained for years that the VA budget ā though continually rising ā is too small to provide enough doctors, medical centers and services.
The VA Budget has more than doubled since 2009, the patient list has risen by 17%. The problem is not the money, the problem is both how the money is being spent and the lack of any accountability. The article even says - the real problem is that the Media is reporting on this.
This is more than "wait times", it's about falsifying records and destroying records to cover up what they are doing.
Blame Bush is NOT going to work.
Lot more than 40 thousand and now the Vietnam Vets are overwhelming the VA with the usual chronic health problems from a life of alcohol, cigarettes and just general aging.
In the recent past, since 2009 - the demand/request for medical attention at VA facilities has risen by 50%, as a result of: returning Afgan and Iraqi war vets and aging vets with declining health (baby boomers). While the caseloads have increased 50% the VA has added just 6 or 8% additional physicians and medical staff. There are now, on average, 200,000 visits a day to VA medical facilities. I think Sen. McCain had it right when he recently said the government had likely promised too much to the vets without providing the funding to fulfill the promises. The key complaint at this point is that vets requesting first-time visits are waiting as long as 100+ days at some of the VA's most popular facilities.
This has nothing to do with government vs private sector, this is about corruption.
Obamacare isnt even in the same realm as the VA. Why would you even put those 2 things together unless you had no idea what one or the other(or both) is ?

This has EVERYTHING TO DO with "government" healthcare.
1. inefficiency
2. bureaucracy
3. lack of incentives for productivity
4. massive paper work
5. additional regulations and rules
6. incentives to limit care
The above IS the VA. If you want government healthcare, you will get what you deserve.
Help Our Military Heroes Like They Have Helped U.S. – We demand President Obama remove Brigadier General Allison A. Hickey, Under Secretary for Benefits, for failure to take care of our military heroes!
Many military heroes have died, many VA claims have been destroyed, many VA employees have violated employment rules and regulations while under the supervision of this woman! Few have been held accountable, especially directors, managers, and supervisors. How many more of our military heroes have to die, never receive benefits they’re entitled to, and struggle to find housing, good medical care, and employment under this wicked, uncaring, impersonal, unsympathetic General?

Thank you for taking a stand on this important issue.
