England isn't the US.

Yeah, and since 1999, nearly over 150 million guns have been sold in the United States. Since then, crime has dropped, a lot.

Since 1999, the rate of total violent crimes has dropped 22.8%
Since 1999, the rate of murders has dropped 16.1%
Since 1999, the rate of forcible rapes has dropped 16.3%
Since 1999, the rate of aggravated assaults has dropped 24.5%
Since 1999, the total rate of property crimes has dropped 21.4%
Since 1999, the rate of burglaries has dropped 9.2%
Since 1999, the rate of larceny/thefts has dropped 21.5%
Since 1999, the rate of motor vehicle thefts has dropped 43.5%

And those numbers are from 2010, it has surely dropped more in the last 4 years. Heck, I bet that if you look at 1999 - 2014... the drop in murders would be around 25%... in just 15 years... without banning guns, but actually increasing them by millions and millions.

In Denver, the number of murders has fallen 58 percent since 2004, from 91 that year to 38 in 2009. The number of murders fell 19 percent from 47 in 2008.

That is 19% in one year, 58% over 5 years... without banning weapons.

Your argument is a fallacy, move to England if you love their system.

I am just one man, but I have had to use a gun twice to defend myself or others, neither made the news, neither were reported to the police, so that is 2 times, how many others are there that have not been reported ?

If a gun is used to defend someone, and nobody gets shot, it doesn't get reported. How many people call the cops after scaring of a mugger? I wouldn't... I have seen the cops called to talk people out of suicide, and they kill them. I have seen people call the cops on their children to make a point, and the cops kill them. I have seen people get killed for refusing to provide ID when they were not legally obligated to.

I would much rather deal with a gun than a cop.

How many times have crooks wandered past a store or other shop, planning to rob it, only to see that it has armed guards... and so he quietly turned around and went home, doing nothing?

Definitely a case where a gun prevented a crime.

But how many of those have been reported to police, or made their way into national statistics?

If statistics don't show such incidents, does that mean that no gun prevented any crime?

Like I said, I fully understand what "rate" means....and yes, you are right....

However, in the end, no matter what the "rate" is....it has a higher death total than those other 2 cities combined...

Most people don't even know what "rate" means...they will look at the end number...

Don't worry, despite his claims, he does not understand statistics in the slightest. Earlier in the thread, he said that Britain's murder rate has dropped 25% since they banned guns. This is true, his assumptions based off of the statistic are not. He extrapolates from the statistic that the drop in murders is a direct result of guns being banned, which can not be extrapolated from that statistic... that is called a casual fallacy.

In the U.S., the murder rate has fallen at similar rates, despite hundreds of millions of gun sales. This doesn't mean guns make people safer, that would be another casual fallacy, but it does prove that more guns does not equal more murders, like the poster is implying.

The murder rate falling is more likely a result of a large generation aging, and advances in technology and communication.

He doesn't understand statistics, he knows how to twist them to fit his agenda. (Even if he has to use fallacies to connect the statistic to his agenda.)

The only way you're "likely" to get murdered in any city, is if you hang around gang areas, or take illegal drugs, or if you're a criminal yourself.

Otherwise, you've got a better chance of getting hit by lightning. Almost.

Wrong again, and Rahm is working to make their already strict gun laws even tougher.
