If you're bored of bashing each other over political differences, check out this interesting story. This will make you think twice about the Made In China logo.

From NPR - Prisoner 1741 spent more than seven months inside a jail in southern China, assembling Christmas lights for export to America. Work days stretched up to 10 hours and conditions were tough, he says. One boss used strands of Christmas lights to whip workers and drive production.

Stories about forced labor have trickled out of China over the years, but what makes Prisoner 1741's so remarkable is that he isn't Chinese. He's American. In fact, he's a middle-aged, American sociology professor from South Carolina.

You actually think this won't turn political. How soon do you think we'll hear about the evils of Capitialism (U.S.) and Socialism/Communism (China)?

OP, thanks for posting this. I wish so much that Americans and other first world ears would think hard about the effects on the rest if the world of our constant consumerism and bargain hunting.

We have the power to change this, and we don't need to wait on any government to do it. Our buying power can change lives around the world.

Foster learned a real lesson, I'm putting his book on my list to read.

the China Free Trade Act signed in 2000, was the nail in the coffin, after NAFTA bent us over and rammed it home.

So much for good `ol USA. We have become an "Also Ran" in the world today.

The article never mentioned why he stole a large amount of money from a co-worker. In the US he likely would have ended up in jail as well, although he would have avoided the physical labor he might have received an unwelcome friend.

Did i read correctly, he confessed to being a thief, stealing money..so being a teacher put's him on some higher moral standard. He's a thief and did his time. Do the crime and pay the time or don't do the crime. And many of us Americans must bargain shop as the taxes keep going up and up and up..
Never mind inflation.

And what do you expect in China, cozy prisons and the right to have a sex change on our dime. Our prison system should take some tact from the Chinese and make em work a bit more than they do. Give em the Orange jump suit and all and of course
feed em, but heck let's save some tax dollars and go back to "what we have here is a failure to communicate, some men you just can't reach"

"I couldn't work as fast as they could. I would assemble about 3,000 lights a day, and the Chinese would do double what I did"

I don't know what's up with these people that make them so efficient workers.

The man pled guilty to what would have been a felony in the US and was sentenced to just 8 months in jail. Now he whines that he had to work while serving his sentence. Of all the things someone could discuss why would we give a thought to the comments of this criminal?

The American is a sociology professor. This was probably the first productive work he ever did.

There was a day, forced labor kept the thought of going to jail for a crime, in the forefront of your brain.

County roads sure were fixed, pronto and at less cost to the tax payers.
