Not only is everyone desperate to believe in something, everyone does believe in something. Belief, proof, faith, are common to all people. Not one of us, I'd bet, can prove even the simplest scientific result, yet we have faith that the people who taught us about it were speaking truly, so we believe it.
Unless a person can independently prove a result, he is ultimately accepting it on faith. That's why people should be skeptical, especially about their own beliefs.
