Very good posting. I also have been to Istanbul (three times) and each time thoroughly enjoyed meeting the people.

But it doesn't answer the question as to why liberals attack Christianity but are to cowardly to do so with Islam.
I think all muslims have some deep seated radicalism in them. Just because you do not see any of this violence in America doesn't mean they do no want to do it.
IMO: I think many progressives chose to lash back at Christianity, because Christian groups try to manipulate our politics, not because of religious/tolerance reasons. Christian groups have a iron grip over the entire Republican/Tea party/Convservative crowd and try to force their mythical views into our lawmaking process.
American muslims, IMO, tend to keep religion and politics separate - the way it should be. I don't agree with many tennants of their religion, but unlike most Christians, they tend to keep it to themselves. So I can live with that.
FYI all groups have violent crazies. Christians, Muslims, Hindus - hell, even Buddhists riot now and then.
No Abrahamic religion is peaceful to modern mores if you take what's written in their scriptures literally. The only problem is that Muslims are more adherent to biblical doctrine than Christians are to theirs. Why? That's subject to debate.
I think another poster nailed this further up. I believe it's because the Middle East is so politically backward, with rampant poverty side by side with the sheiks' fabulous oil wealth and monarchical government, and oh, yeah, because Western countries have been invading for decades to steal that oil.
Poor and oppressed people are vulnerable to every devious, power-seeking "cleric" walking down the road. There has to be a reason why they're poor, and it's easier to believe it's because of evil Westerners/heretics than it is to believe any other reason.
Think about Central and South America in the '80s. Communism and socialism ran wild there for exactly the same reasons. American companies and/or the CIA "invading," and military dictatorships hoarding the wealth. It can be a religion, it can be a political philosophy -- either way, when you have Third World conditions, it's fertile ground for something that promises to fix everything and make it all right.
In short, people who say "Islam is a religion of peace" understand this bigger picture. People who rant and rave about Islam don't. It's as simple as that.
What is with this view I keep hearing about liberals and Islam? I am a liberal. In some ways I would even say I am a leftist. But I certainly have no love for any of the Abrahamic religions, nor do any of my fellow liberals and leftists. Why would I ever give my support to a religion that causes so much harm and human suffering? That is not moral and not something I could ever get behind.

Reading the Bible, Christianity isn't really interested in coexistence either. Religion is a tool, and dangerous people take advantage of it. They religion they use is much more chance than anything.

I'll tell you why: Islam's problems with the West start with Israel, a situation that the US condones.
"All Muslims have deep-seated radicalism", there are entire countries where people are almost all Muslim and nobody bombs each other. It is a cultural problem, not a religious one.
I posted elsewhere where Islam is responsible for hundreds of millions of deaths of unbelievers.
Why should it ever be considered a "peaceful" religion?
