Bullflop. If Obama hadn't been so shortsighted he could've negotiated a status of forces agreement with Iraq and had an ally in the region that could've have potentially changed the course of the future in the mAid-east.
So libs, tell us again about Al-Qaeda being on the run.
I gather you don't recall that negotiations did take place before the full withdrawal. The deal offered was that the US would leave several thousands of troops in Iraq to continue training the security forces. Al-Maliki would accept the troops but it was conditional: US military could be charged with crimes and would be tried in court under Islamic law with no interference from the US. Obama said no deal, Al-Maliki said goodbye. Of course all it would have taken was for one US service member be charged with a crime and the US would have withdrew. Obviously Al-Maliki is talking to the US and probably begging for a return of boots on the ground.During Saddam's time AQ did not have a presence in Iraq. When the US forces left, AQ had already set up camp in Iraq.
Here we go, the total collapse of Obama's foreign policy for all to see...let's hope there's no one left behind for Obama to trade for. Maybe he'll send them someplace safe like Libya.
If I repeat any posts I am sorry. Iraq was just an artificial country held together by the strong arm and brutality of Saddam Hussein. As bad as Hussein was he kept a lid on the pressure cooker of Sunni and Shi'ite blood rivalry. The US invasion unleashed all that hatred and was only kept under control by the strong arm of US control.
The jihadist merely bided their time until the US left. You can't blame Obama for this disaster as the fall of Iraq to extremist jihadist was as inevitable as the fall of Vietnam. There were many analysist who foresaw this outcome at the start of the US invasion. If the US wanted to stop the fall of the Iraqi government, we could send in more US troops and have more US deaths, all of which would be futile deaths because Iraqi civil war is inevitable as soon as we left. Iraq is a jihadist playground and will wind up being a jihadist training ground just like Pre 9-11 Afghanistan. The Iraqi War was a trillion dollar disaster with many needless US deaths.

I think we should have stayed on the sidelines as an observer and given them another 1400 years to figure it out, not our problem.

Iraq was stable under Saddam, an enemy of al Qaeda. No matter how much you hate Obama it doesn't change the fact Iraq hasn't been truly stable since Saddam was ousted.
Not our country, not our problem. We gave the Iraqi people a tremendous opportunity by eliminating a brutal dictator that had murdered a million people. Even with such an opportunity...this is what they allowed to happen. Muslims killing people, no surprise, and nothing we can do to stop it.
Tremendous opportunity, eh? Tremendous opportunity to be ground between al-Qaeda and the Tehran mullahs, sure.
This sort of self-congratulatory sanctimony always reminds me of the wedding scene in Caligula; after deflowering the bride and violating the groom, Caligula declares "I hope you appreciate how I've exhausted myself to make your wedding day holy."
It's amazing how fast this happened and the Iraqi troops deserted in a panic leaving behind tanks and other arms. Maliki is now purging the government of Sunni leadership rather, very bad timing as they need to pull it together. I understand they are consolidating their defense north of Baghdad, this is bad news for the US and for the entire region.
How fast? This has been building up for years - right after the US withdrawal. Any news about it was buried on the "For Sale" page in the major tabloids and was kept hush-hush in the media.
