The great socialist society ideology is a dismal failure... again!

First it was a shortage of toilet paper, and now it's food and coffins. Even though this country is awash in oil, they are suffering a shared misery.

Venezuela Shortages Reach the Grave - ABC News

Six years ago: Chávez said that "It's a very young party" with an average age of 35 among members."

Analysts agreed, saying: "The assumption is that the younger people are going to be Bolivarians [in support of Chávez], they are going to be the ones whose families have benefited from Chávez's social programs.

Sounds a lot like progressive thinking in the US, doesn't it?

The US produces 10% of the word's oil. Venezuela produces 3.5%. US is more "awash in oil" so why do we still have poverty?

Unchecked legal immigration that adds 1.1000,000 new people to this nation, many of them unskilled and need welfare assistants.
Unchecked illegal immigration adding 1.3,000,000 unskilled person that have kids that use the welfare system and pay for little if anything into it, who spread poverty, crime and leftist memes and cultural points.
Unchecked regulations that harm small business and kills creativity and innovation.
Failed schools that pander to the teacher unions rather then compete and produce smart and educated students.
College that indoctrinate rather then educate.
A tax systems mixed with regulations that chase businesses both domestic and foreign over seas along with their profits.

Are you serious? You obviously have no clue what being poor in Venezuela is compared to being poor here. When's the last time you couldn't buy toilet paper? Did you bother to read the article?

Also,
Venezuela has a population of only 29M, and the US has a population of 350M. 29M with 3.5% of the world oil, which adds up to 3x more oil per citizen than the US. If they could eat oil they'd be fat, unfortunately they need food and have none.

Venezuela has a smaller population. It's oil wealth is comparatively greater. Which means your comparison is meaningless.

The problem is that Venezuela's centrally controlled economy creates an environment likely to create shortages of commodities. Exactly the expected result from socialism.

The US will always have poverty, just like every other country.

Thanks for the backup. We should also make it clear that the poor in this country would be considered wealthy in 95% of the world. The poor here have big sceen televisions, air conditioning, cars, and smart phones... oh the humanity of it!

The poor in Venezuela sleep on dirt.

Well, no they don't all have those things.

Having said that, yes, they are doing much better than the poor in some other countries.

You did understand the point. The closest thing we have to the poor of the world are the people, including many many vets, who live on the streets. We should definitely be ashamed of that.

James Q. Wilson has stated, “The poorest Americans today live a better life than all but the richest persons a hundred years ago.”In 2005, the typical household defined as poor by the government had a car and air conditioning. For entertainment, the household had two color televisions, cable or satellite TV, a DVD player, and a VCR. If there were children, especially boys, in the home, the family had a game system, such as an Xbox or a PlayStation. In the kitchen, the household had a refrigerator, an oven and stove, and a microwave. Other household conveniences included a clothes washer, clothes dryer, ceiling fans, a cordless phone, and a coffee maker.

The home of the typical poor family was not overcrowded and was in good repair. In fact, the typical poor American had more living space than the average European. The typical poor American family was also able to obtain medical care when needed. By its own report, the typical family was not hungry and had sufficient funds during the past year to meet all essential needs.

We are so wealthy in this country that we have disconnected from what "poor" actually means.

Why don't we see Venezuelans migrating, claiming refugee status, or trying to cross our borders?
