The best episode of the West Wing deals with senior officials from the country of Belarus at the White House trying to write their constitution for their "new" country.
The officials want a presidential system "like America" because they want their guy to have strong powers to override the other branches of government. The character Toby Zeigler explains that giving a country with a history of brutal dictatorships a presidential system is asking for trouble. Instead they should set up a parliamentary system. They don't want that, they are supporters of "president xyz" and he needs to have strong powers.
In fact, professors from Yale and other Ivy League universities have described the presidential system "Americas most dangerous export". It has been responsible for wrecking havoc on over 30 countries worldwide and is a recipe for constitutional breakdown. Only four presidential systems have lasted longer than thirty years.
America can not keep spending billions "fixing" other countries. The second we leave, they collapse. The ME especially. It doesn't matter if a slight majority want a democracy because the minority is the one who speaks up over there. Then they go around and kill and behead anyone who doesn't agree with them. When you have people who can nor separate religion and government (which the ME OBVIOUSLY CAN NOT DO) you can't have a democracy. It doesn't mix and it will never mix.
First and foremost Iraq needs to be divided up into 3 separate countries. Kurdistan is doing just fine and is basically its own country. Need to give the Sunnis and Shiias something similar.
What should we do in the middle east? Nothing. We have groups of seventh century cavemen, trapped in a nineteenth century world, who want to kill everyone who believes in a magical person that is different than their magical person. We should prevent them from getting nukes and let them fight it out among themselves.

Solution? Get out! Stop propping up the regimes over there. Quit trying to meddle in their affairs. If they want to live like a bunch of uncivilized buffoons, then so be it. It's time to focus on our onw country for once.
We do not have the duty to bring "peace and stability" to any nation but our own. Let the folks in the ME slaughter each other.
The US might as well have taken the money spent on Iraq and set it on fire for all the good it did. Would have saved 4500 American lives.
