Because gay people don't actually matter, right? Why should students learn about them and their experiences?
Prostitutes are part of our society too , and they matter, but teaching the Constitution is far more important than citing examples of sexual immorality, especially if refererence to that immorality suggests that it is acceptable behavior.

I agree 100%.
However, we are talking about gays. Not immorality here. So let's stick to the topic.
A better way to look at it, however, is that the constitution is more important because it encompasses rights for both, straight, gay, black, white, etc. people. That should be emphasized in the teachings of the constitution since that's what the constitution is.
They took the money away specifically because the picks one book a year for the entire college to read, thats it. And then barred them from reading it, and then said they would give the money back and that they could only use it if they spent it on the US Constitution, Declaration of Independence, and Federalist Papers, which based on common knowledge of college, they already do.
THats not what happened at all,And you arent so stupid as to believe it is. and it p/o's me that you pretend to be to further your own political ideology.
You think They shouldnt be made to read a gay themed book, thats fine, but this has nothing to do with people being against them teaching the Constitution.
I did not lie. You did not understand. The "progressives" were trying to push gay agenda nonsense via "gay studies" and pro gay books, this was cut from the curriculum budget because it was a waste of money and offered no actual educational value, just like "women's studies" and other such nonsense courses. When the schools wanted that budget money back they decided to spend it towards courses that teach about The Constitution, something that ACTUALLY has educational value. This however made the "Progressives" very, very upset and they would rather have their ridiculous "gay studies" classes instead.
What's even more stupid is they don't seem to understand that The Constitution has value to everyone, including gay people, it's in their best interest to know what their God given Rights are just like everyone else and why this Country was founded. Why "Progressives" have a problem with this is beyond me.

Um, no. It was cut because some parents objected to the content of the books and called and complained because they couldn't get another book assigned. Then the Republicans in the state legislature restored the budget but added the requirement that the money be spent on studying the Constitution, Declaration of Independence and Federalist Papers. Even the FOX story agrees on this:
Quote:
Republican state Rep. Garry Smith, who introduced the cuts in the House, told FoxNews.com in March he received complaints from constituents who have children at both schools. He said when they or their students objected to the books' content, they were told they could not read an alternative book.
...
(Democratic representative James) Smith said he believes the amendment requiring Constitution lessons was added so Republican lawmakers can claim victory in the fight.
And really, these are college level students we're talking about. They learn about the government documents in history class in grade school. It's not like they've never been exposed to the Constitution.
You can dress up the pig all you want, but these are the facts. The schools were punished by the legislature for requiring some students to read a couple of books about gay people, JUST because they were books about gay people.
And yet you're so ready to believe something that fits into your preconceived notions of "clueless Progressives" you'll twist the truth.
"The South Carolina legislature has rankled liberal groups after requiring that a pair of public schools use state funds to teach the U.S. Constitution and other founding documents -- on the heels of a budget fight over gay-themed books in the curriculum. "
"State House lawmakers previously had cut funds from two public universities in retaliation for required-reading material containing homosexual themes. A revised budget passed by both the House and the Senate earlier this month, though, restored the money -- but dictated that exact amount be spent "for instruction in the provisions and principles of the United States Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, and the Federalist Papers, including the study of and devotion to American institutions and ideals."
"The bill restored at least $52,000 for the College of Charleston, and at least $17,000 for USC-Upstate, which were the original amounts cut back in March. The legislation also says that any school that conducts a mandatory reading program must provide an alternative in case the chosen book conflicts with any students’ moral or religious beliefs. "
"Gov. Nikki Haley went along with the Constitution requirement on Thursday, saying she did not agree with it but kept it in because lawmakers spent so much time on the bill. She said her office "didn't want to interject ourselves into that."
"I don't believe legislators should micromanage our boards," she said, according to The Associated Press. "They elect board members, so if they want to beat up on them, go for it... but to go in there and micromanage books being read, I think that's out of our purview."
Personally, I think that the whole "gay studies" thing is complete garbage and has no place in any educational facility, it has zero educational value and is nothing more than indoctrination of impressionable students. The fact that "Progressives" are outraged that the Constitution is being taught instead just shows how they live outside of reality.
"Gay Studies" should be an elective class (or path, if someone can make up a major around it) just like "Women's Studies" are.
No one should be forced to take a class in "Strong Women of the 1800's" if they don't want to. No one should have to take a class in "All about Gay Folks", etc. Waste of tuition dollars.
Mandatory reading? About the gay plight? I thought the point was to be accepted and get married and be just like everyone else. Not make a federal case out of sexuality....let alone become a "class" of "mandatory reading up about".
What's next? Breaking it all down? Lesbian studies - what makes a butch a butch?, gay males who do porn and why studies, people who are bi/tri/poly AND monogamous at the same time... in their heads?
Let it all fall under Human Sexuality classes. You wanna be a social worker, a teacher, a school counselor, a psychologist or go to med school and be a psychiatrist? Take those classes that require those books to read...leave those who just want to be architects, engineers, stock brokers, PR agents, mailmen, garbage collectors, pays ed teachers, pharmacists, teachers or pediatricians, etc., alone.
